Penner Penalty Save Helps Cal Poly Earn Wednesday Draw at CSUN
10/12/2022 9:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE – Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner's 86th-minute penalty save from CSUN forward Jamar Ricketts helped the Cal Poly men's soccer program earn a Wednesday evening road point at Matador Soccer Field as the Mustangs finished in a scoreless draw.
With Mustang junior defender Erik Cabrera-Trujillo whistled for a handball inside Cal Poly's penalty box, Ricketts stepped to the spot, but his penalty – low and to Penner's diving right – was corralled.
With the draw, Cal Poly (1-9-3, 1-1-3) moved into a sixth-place tie in the Big West Conference standings on six points alongside UC Irvine (2-12-1, 2-4-0) and Saturday's opponent, UC San Diego (6-7-2, 2-4-0). All three sides trail leader UC Santa Barbara by five points. Three further programs share second place on 10 points with CSUN alone in fifth with seven points.
Completing a two-match road trip, Cal Poly visits UC San Diego for the first time at the Division I level on Saturday, Oct. 15. Match time is 7 p.m.
Each side produced three shot attempts during the first half, but Cal Poly enjoyed the lone effort on frame with sophomore forward Jackson Kestler turned away by Matadors goalkeeper Cooper Wenzel in the third minute.
Into the second half, Penner (above) produced saves in the 56th and 57th minutes to preserve the scoreless match. Eleven seconds after the second save, CSUN saw a goal ruled offside.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to snatch a late goal occurred in the 70th, but freshman forward Sean Tague – in on goal versus Wenzel – fired wide of the left post.
