Second-Half Rally Comes Up Short Saturday at UC San Diego
10/15/2022 10:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
LA JOLLA – Facing a four-goal deficit after 31 minutes Saturday evening, the Cal Poly men's soccer program received the first collegiate goals from freshman defender Oscar Baudey and sophomore forward Jackson Kestler (above), but – despite producing 17 second-half shot attempts – failed to find the equalizer and dropped a 4-3 decision at Triton Soccer Stadium.
With Cal Poly visiting UC San Diego for the first time at the Division I level, the Tritons received a ninth-minute strike from defender Noah Sonenstein before forward Nick Cirrito converted an 11th-minute penalty. UC San Diego forward Max Carvalho compounded matters in the 31st, scoring twice 18 seconds apart to hand Cal Poly the 4-0 disadvantage.
Limited to one shot on goal during the first half, Cal Poly scored with its first attempt of the second half as sophomore defender Sebastien Maza set up Baudey in the 50th minute.
Cal Poly tested Tritons goalkeeper Dylan Huy – a halftime substitute – twice more before Kestler produced his first collegiate goal in the 61st after being supplied by sophomore forward Ocean Salari.
Kestler, who enjoyed a career high six shot attempts, then notched the brace on 82 minutes with sophomore midfielder Andrew McGee earning his first career assist.
With the opportunity to tie the matchup just a minute later, Kestler saw another attempt turned away by Huy – one of the six second-half saves from the Tritons goalkeeper.
Saturday's setback dropped the Mustangs (1-10-3, 1-2-3) into seventh place in the Big West Conference standings on six points alongside UC Irvine and, Cal Poly's Wednesday, Oct. 19 home opponent, Sacramento State. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
With the top six programs in the table qualifying for the Nov. 2, 5 and 12 Big West Tournament, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and Sacramento State trail now sixth-place UC San Diego by three points.
