Mustangs Fall Wednesday Evening to Sacramento State
10/19/2022 10:09:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Four different Sacramento State players found the back of the Cal Poly men's soccer net Wednesday evening as the Mustangs dropped a 4-0 home decision to the Hornets inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
With Wednesday's setback, Cal Poly fell to ninth place in the Big West Conference standings, remaining on six points. With two regular season matches to play, however, the Mustangs trail three programs tied for sixth place – UC San Diego, Sacramento State and UC Irvine – by just three points.
With the top six programs in the table qualifying for the Nov. 2, 5 and 12 Big West Tournament, Cal Poly plays its final regular season road match on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara. Kickoff from Harder Stadium is 7 p.m.
During Wednesday's matchup, Cal Poly sophomore forward Drew Patterson (above) saw a seventh-minute goal disallowed for offsides and Sacramento State scored its opener two minutes later after forward Dominic Vegaalban squared a pass back for midfielder Francisco Magana, who bested Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner at the right post.
The Hornets doubled their advantage on 23 minutes with Vegaalban setting up forward Austin Wehner.
Cal Poly was then dealt a 3-0 disadvantage in the 29th minute after freshman midfielder Garcia was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area. Vegaalban converted his attempt from the spot as Sacramento State finished the first half scoring three times on four shot attempts.
Into the second half, Sacramento State completed the scoring on 59 minutes after defender Genaro Alfaro struck a free kick at the left post.
