Mustangs Earn 1-1 Draw at UCSB, but Eliminated from Big West Tournament
10/22/2022 10:24:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SANTA BARBARA – Sophomore forward Noah Boettiger's first collegiate goal in the 79th minute provided the Cal Poly men's soccer program a brief lead at Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening but, in front of 7,535 fans at Harder Stadium – the third best attended collegiate match in the nation this fall – Gauchos forward Finn Ballard McBride equalized three minutes from full time as the matchup finished in a 1-1 draw.
With Saturday's tie – Cal Poly's first road point at UC Santa Barbara since a scoreless draw in 2017 – the Mustangs were eliminated from Big West Conference Tournament contention. On seven points, Cal Poly now trails eighth place UC Davis by four with just one regular season game remaining.
That Senior Day matchup comes on Saturday, Oct. 29 as the Mustangs host CSU Bakersfield. Kickoff from Alex G. Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
Without a shot attempt during the opening 34 minutes of the second half, Cal Poly broke into UC Santa Barbara's half as freshman forward Sean McTague dribbled in on goal. McTague crossed for freshman forward Luke Schaefer, who squared a pass back to junior defender Erik Cabrera-Trujillo. An initial shot by Cabrera-Trujillo was blocked by Gauchos defender Caden Vom Steeg, but the rebound came back for Boettiger, whose follow-up attempt went off UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Leroy Zeller's gloves and over the goal line.
Boettiger's goal was the first conceded by UC Santa Barbara in seven Big West matches, snapping a 657-minute scoreless streak by the Gauchos.
Seeking its first victory at UC Santa Barbara since 2012, Cal Poly's lead last just eight minutes. UC Santa Barbara produced 13 second half shot attempts and the 12th from McBride bested Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Penner – who finished with five saves – to level the scoreline in the 87th minute.
During Saturday's first half, Cal Poly tested Zeller three times, but sophomore defender Logan Thralls was turned away in the ninth minute, Cabrera-Trujillo was thwarted on 15 and sophomore midfielder Andrew McGee saw a 38th-minute attempt stopped.
At the other end of Harder Stadium, Gauchos midfielder Nemo Philipp struck the crossbar in the 27th. Penner recorded his first save 13 seconds from halftime, dropping down at the left post to glove away a shot by defender Henry Davies.
Into the second half, Penner saved attempts McBride in the 58th minute and, in the 59th, from a point-blank header in front of goal.
Penner returned in the 68th to push midfielder Eddie Villeda's attempt from distance. Then, in the 74th, McBride struck the underside of the crossbar before Penner saved a grounder from Nemo to preserve the scoreless deadlock.
