Atkinson Double Helps Cal Poly Close 2022 with 3-2 Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO – With just one collegiate shot on target entering play Saturday evening, midfielder Jalen Atkinson (above) scored his first two collegiate goals, producing a 47th-minute go-ahead effort before securing the 89th-minute game-winner as the Cal Poly men's soccer program completed the 2022 season with a 3-2 home victory against CSU Bakersfield.
Making just his sixth collegiate appearance and playing his final career game, Atkinson also helped set up senior forward Nick Giacalone's first Mustang goal in the 31st minute to secure the first and only five-point match by a Mustang in 2022.
Eliminated from Big West Tournament contention entering the night, Cal Poly's 10-point finish in the final conference standings marked its fifth double-digit point effort in the last seven seasons.
With Saturday's match drawn 1-1 at halftime through CSU Bakersfield forward Carlos Armendariz's 29th-minute strike and Giacalone's 31st-minute equalizer, Cal Poly went ahead – briefly – two minutes after the restart as Atkinson produced his first goal of the night.
Just 84 seconds later, CSU Bakersfield defender Juan Pablo Alvarez's corner kick opportunity found the head of Armendariz, who completed the first brace of the day to draw the matchup, 2-2.
Both programs enjoyed opportunities to seize the lead in the final 10 minutes with CSU Bakersfield goalkeeper Damian Alguera turning away Mustang sophomore forward Conner Lisenbee in the 83rd and Giacalone in the 86th.
At the other end, Alvarez struck the right post in the 85th before Armendariz fired the rebounded effort wide of the left post.
Just 114 seconds from full time, however, Atkinson latched onto a loose ball off a CSU Bakersfield defender and lined another attempt past Alguera to secure Cal Poly's 3-2 victory.
