Cal Poly Women's Soccer Hosts San Diego, Hawai'i to Cap Homestand

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a dominant showing against rival UC Santa Barbara to open Big West play, Cal Poly women's soccer will look to keep the momentum rolling when they welcome San Diego and Hawai'i to Alex G. Spanos Stadium this week.
First up is a battle with the Toreros (2-4-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday to wrap up the Mustangs' non-conference slate. This marks the first time since 2010 that Cal Poly (3-5-0, 1-0-0 Big West) will play a non-conference match after starting Big West action. San Diego is also the third West Coast Conference opponent Cal Poly has faced this season, joining Saint Mary's and Gonzaga.
The Mustangs will put a cap on their three-game homestand at noon Sunday when they host conference foe Hawai'i (4-2-0, 1-0-0). Cal Poly will honor its 2022 senior class prior to the match. Through one Big West match, Cal Poly, Hawai'i and CSU Bakersfield sit atop the conference standings with 3 points apiece. Hawai'i travels to UCSB on Thursday before facing the Mustangs.

CAL POLY VERSUS SAN DIEGO: The Mustangs are 5-7-1 all-time against San Diego with their last win coming on Sept. 26, 2003. The last meeting between the two teams occurred on Sept. 8, 2019, when the Toreros earned a 1-0 home victory over Cal Poly.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO: The Toreros, picked to finish last in the West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, have faced three Big West opponents this season, earning a 2-1 win over CSU Bakersfield and a 1-0 victory over UC Irvine, and forcing a 2-2 tie at Long Beach State. San Diego is fresh off a 5-0 loss at No. 9 Stanford last Thursday which saw them concede four second-half goals. Freshman Cameryn Maddox leads the Toreros' attack with two goals and two assists this season. Freshman forward Josefine Schlichting has also netted a pair of goals. In net, freshman Sophine Kevorkian has started seven matches, allowing 2.17 goals per match, and posting a .690 save percentage and two shutouts with a 2-3-1 record. San Diego went 6-11-1 a year ago.
CAL POLY VERSUS HAWAI'I: Cal Poly is 8-1-2 all-time against the Rainbow Wahine. The Mustangs only loss to Hawai'i occurred on Oct. 19, 2018, in a 4-0 defeat at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Cal Poly took down the Rainbow Wahine 2-1 last year at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.
SCOUTING HAWAI'I: The Rainbow Wahine, picked to finish seventh in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll, have won back-to-back matches and earned a 1-0 home victory over UC Davis in their conference opener last Thursday. The two losses for Hawai'i this season came at Grand Canyon and at Portland and the team is led by sophomore forward Krista Peterson, who has three goals and two assists this season and is averaging 1.33 points per match, third best in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine, who posted a 2-9-3 overall record in 2021, have also relied heavily on redshirt freshman forward Amber Gilbert, two goals and two assists, and Preseason All-Conference selection Kelci Sumida, one goal and three assists, on attack this fall. Lauren Marquez and Sophie Augustin have split time in net for Hawai'i, with Marquez earning four starts and Augustin two. After securing her second shutout of the season in a win over UC Davis, Marquez was named Big West Defensive Player of the Year. The week prior, Augustin won the award following a 2-1 win for the Rainbow Wahine at Portland State. Marquez currently leads the Big West in goals against average, surrendering 0.857 goals per match.
COMMANDING THE MIDFIELD: Three midfielders have scored two goals for the Mustangs this season — seniors Camille Lafaix and Megan Hansen, and sophomore Peja Balanon, who was named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week after netting a brace in the win over the Gauchos.
DISHIN' IT OFF: Freshman Emily Lieber and sophomore McKenna Carbon each have three assists this season, tied for the second most in the conference. Carbon is averaging 0.50 assists per match, tied for the best in the conference, and has assisted on goals in back-to-back matches. Two of Lieber's helpers came on game-winning goals in road wins over Minnesota and Sacramento State.
CLEAN SHEET MACHINE: Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel posted her second shutout of the season in the victory over UCSB. In 14 career starts, Samuel has produced six clean sheets. She is averaging 7.33 saves per match this season, second best in the Big West and sixth best among Division I goalkeepers. Samuel also ranks third in the conference in save percentage (.772) and total saves (44).
ON THE BOARD: Freshman defender Camryn Penn earned her first career point against the Gauchos, assisting on Lafaix's game-winning goal in the 13th minute. Penn has started in seven of Cal Poly's eight matches this season, racking up 520 minutes.
IRONWOMAN: Sophomore defender Emma Brown hasn't stepped off the pitch this season, playing 90 minutes in every match. She was a United Soccer Coaches All-West Region second team selection in 2021, and prior to this season was one of 35 players in Division I women's soccer to be named a USC "Defender to Watch."
