SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Facing the No. 1-ranked team in the country during the regular season for the sixth time in program history, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team battled hard, but came up short to a talented Stanford side 1-0 on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
“Absolutely incredible effort by the girls,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match. “A gritty performance, and to be honest with you, that’s the standard now. For me, it’s a disappointing result, and I know the team feels the same way because this program has grown and elevated to the point where we believe we can go into these games and win … we were almost able to get a point out of this game, and our team showed up and fought,”
Early in the match, junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski made a beautiful save with her fingertips on a shot to the bottom left post by Stanford’s Charlotte Kohler. But in the 33rd minute, Kohler was able to break through, painting a shot to the top right post to score the match’s lone goal and give Stanford a 1-0 lead.
Despite trailing, the Mustangs continued to fight, earning some of their best chances late in the match. In the 88th minute, freshman Madison Lujan sent a scorching shot from about 20 yards out just wide of the right post. Then just seconds later, Lujan earned another opportunity off a Stanford turnover, firing a shot to the bottom right corner that was saved by the goalkeeper.
Ultimately, the Cardinal (1-0) prevailed in a rematch of last year’s NCAA First Round match between the two sides.
The Mustangs were outshot 17-4 and Porubski made four saves in her 19th consecutive start in net. Senior forward Annika Smith recorded her 33rd straight start, and senior Sophia Minnite, junior Mya Clarke, freshman Kate Nunes, Lujan and several others had standout individual performances.
Cal Poly (1-1) continues its four-match homestand to open the season when they welcome San Jose State to Spanos at 1 p.m. next Sunday, Aug. 23. The program will honor its four graduating seniors prior to the match, and you can purchase tickets HERE.
