Peja Balanon Named Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After earning a brace in a 4-0 victory over Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara, sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon has been crowned the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
In just her second career start as a Mustang, Balanon netted a pair of goals to help Cal Poly women's soccer capture its first victory over the Gauchos at Alex G. Spanos Stadium since 2014.
Balanon's first tally came in the 62nd minute on a UCSB turnover just outside the box following a throw-in. She blasted a shot from 20 yards out off the left post to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage and secure her first career goal.
Eight minutes later, the Vacaville, Calif. native struck again. Sophomore McKenna Carbon played a perfect cross into the box and Balanon took care of the rest to make it 3-0 Cal Poly.
Balanon made substitute appearances in the Mustangs' first six matches this season, before making her first career start in a 3-2 loss at Washington State on Sept. 11. The Vanden High grad played 72 minutes in last Thursday's win over the Gauchos.
