Lieber's First Career Goal Sends Mustangs to Victory over San Diego
9/22/2022 10:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A goal from freshman forward Emily Lieber in the 84th minute allowed Cal Poly women's soccer to wrap up non-conference play Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over San Diego at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
"We played well," head coach Alex Crozier said after the match. "We were pretty sharp, we were moving the ball well and we created a lot of half chances … Someone needed to step up and Lieber did it. She did a great job."
Lieber's game-winning strike from 20 yards out to the top left corner of the net was her first career goal. Lieber leads the team with 5 points this season and she's proven to be an integral part of the Mustangs' attack.
"She's one of many," Crozier said. "We have a very deep team, but she does a great job on the right side. She's got some pace … and she's dangerous. She's been a great addition to the team."
Defender Aynsley Conner, a sophomore transfer from Minnesota, earned an assist on Lieber's tally, her first career point as a Mustang.
Cal Poly generated several dangerous scoring opportunities in the opening half as San Diego goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian steered aside Mustang shots by senior midfielder Camille Lafaix in the 24th minute and senior forward Monserrat Hernandez Marquez in the 30th minute.
Just before halftime, sophomore midfielder Peja Balanon, who scored a brace in a 4-0 home win over UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 15, watched Kevorkian secure a kick save on her shot from inside the box.
Cal Poly outshot the Toreros (2-5-2) 8-2 in the first half.
In the 76th minute, freshman midfielder Brennan Cole nearly found the back of the net when her blast off a free kick from 24 yards out rang off the crossbar.
The Mustangs fended off San Diego down the stretch to earn their third 1-0 victory this season and fourth shutout.
"Overall, it was a great team performance," Crozier said. "Everyone played well and it was one of those games where we were going to keep pushing."
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made two saves to secure her second-straight shutout, and third on the season. The Mustangs outshot San Diego 12-6 to earn their first victory over the Toreros since 2003 and improve to 6-7-1 all-time against their non-conference foe.
Cal Poly (4-5-0, 1-0-0 Big West) returns to Big West action at noon Sunday when they host Hawai'i (4-2-1, 1-0-1 Big West) on Senior Day. The Rainbow Wahine earned a 0-0 draw at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday and currently sit atop the conference standings alongside Long Beach State with 4 points.
