Cal Poly Secures Scoreless Draw at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. — Playing without two of its team captains, Cal Poly women’s soccer found a way to secure a scoreless draw against Cal on Thursday at Edwards Stadium.
It was the Mustangs’ first time earning a result at Cal since 2009.
“I couldn’t be more proud,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, “… we talk a lot about building a powerhouse sisterhood and I think nonconference serves that purpose and today you saw the sisterhood come to life. The girls absolutely fighting and laying their bodies on the line.”
The Mustangs took the pitch without the heart of their midfield — fifth-year Sophia Minnite — and the reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Year Annika Smith. Sophomore Farra Franklin also missed her fourth consecutive match due to injury. Despite all the injuries, Cal Poly fought with everything they had to keep the Golden Bears (1-2-3) off the board.
After having a goal called back due to offsides early in the match, Cal earned a penalty kick in the 17th minute. With a potential deficit looming, junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski stepped and dove to her right to save a penalty kick attempt by Cal’s Emelia Warta.
The incredible individual effort allowed the match to go into halftime locked at 0-0.
“The defense today was absolutely insane, they just sold out on everything,” Porubski said. “I felt like there was an incredible willingness to fight for one another. To have that backline in front of me is so special to me, I don’t know any other program where I’d feel that level of commitment.”
Cal Poly’s unbelievable defensive effort continued in the second half as senior Siena Urzua, juniors Lilly Cole and Mya Clarke and the rest of the team fended one attack after another by the Golden Bears.
It was a gritty performance that required an unwavering commitment by everyone to lock things down defensively to earn a result.
“To get a result in a hard place like Cal against a top program like this is fantastic,” Silva said, “and I think it’s pretty season-defining because I think our team came together today without a couple of key pieces.”
Porubski finished with three saves to secure her 11th career clean sheet and her second of the season. It was the third shutout of the season for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly returns to action next Thursday, Sept. 10, to face Pacific in Stockton at 6 p.m.
