Cal Poly Drops First Road Match 2-0 at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. — In its first road match of the season, the Cal Poly women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Arizona State on Sunday night at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

“I thought we had a good game plan coming in,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, “… it was disappointing to concede a goal within the first five minutes, but I thought we responded fairly well, and then I think as the game went on, I feel like there was one team that wanted it more, that believed more and that wasn’t us, that was Arizona State.”

The talented Sun Devils (4-0-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal less than four minutes into the match. The Mustangs (2-2-1) settled in after that and started to enforce their style of play, pressing the ASU backline and forcing turnovers. Cal Poly’s aggressiveness led to some opportunities in the first half, including one from sophomore Maddy Cole, but the Mustangs were unable to breakthrough.

Just over six minutes into the second half, sophomore Kenzie Herzing earned arguably Cal Poly’s most dangerous scoring opportunity of the night. Herzing dribbled down the right wing and used her speed to get around a defender in the box, firing a blistering shot just over the top of the net.

The Sun Devils then slowly took a stranglehold on the match, doubling their lead with a goal in the 82nd minute.

The match was called in the 87th minute due to inclement weather in the area.

Junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski made four saves in the match and ASU finished with a 14-5 shot advantage. Cole, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, made her first start as a Mustang.

Cal Poly continues a four-match road swing when they visit Cal at 4 p.m. Thursday.
