SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s soccer team wrapped up a four-match homestand to open the season Thursday, earning a 1-1 draw against San Diego at Spanos Stadium.
“I think it’s a pretty fair result to be perfectly honest with you,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match. “I feel like in the first half it was all San Diego … but the last 10 minutes of the first half I thought we started to grow into the game, and I thought the second half was primarily ours. I thought we grew in that second half, created some chances, but we need to execute better.”
The Mustangs (2-1-1) took a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the match. Senior defender Siena Urzua sent a free kick from about 30 yards out into the box that was headed by a San Diego defender into the back of the net for an own goal.
About 20 minutes later though, the Toreros (1-1-2) leveled the match when a corner kick played into the box was headed in by USD’s Hannah Faklaris.
The 1-1 scoreline remained intact heading into halftime, and in the final 45 minutes the Mustangs began to find their rhythm and took control of the match. In the 78th minute, Urzua nearly headed home a corner kick played in by junior Miah Thomas, but a San Diego defender made a miraculous save with her left foot to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
Sophomore Kenzie Herzing fired a dangerous shot on net in the 87th minute and with just 18 seconds remaining Cal Poly earned a free kick just outside the top of the 18-yard box thanks to a handball by the Toreros. Thomas stepped up and sent a shot toward the bottom left post that was saved by the USD goalkeeper, allowing the match to end in a 1-1 draw.
San Diego outshot Cal Poly 9-7 in the match and junior Sam Liaty, a transfer from Tarleton State, made her first start as a Mustang.
“We just got to continue to dig deeper,” Silva said, “watch film, get better, get the reps we need in training and eventually the goals will start coming.”
Cal Poly heads to Tempe on Sunday to face Arizona State in its first road match of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ with live scoring available HERE.
