Eight-Game Win Streak Snapped with Tuesday Loss to Fresno State
4/19/2022 6:16:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman left fielder Jessica Clements (above) produced her fourth four-hit game of the season Tuesday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program – after stranding eight baserunners versus Fresno State – saw an eight-game winning streak snapped with a 2-0 loss at Bob Janssen Field.
Perfect through the opening three innings for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Kate Judy (5-10) conceded a leadoff single to Bulldogs designated player Alyssa Orr to open the fourth. Orr then stole second and moved to third through a sacrifice bunt from right fielder Emery Nielson before left fielder Keahilele Mattson produced a run-scoring single to place the Bulldogs up, 1-0.
The Mustangs (14-22) – whose eight-game winning streak entering Tuesday was the program's lengthiest since taking nine in a row in 2017 – were limited to two hits during the opening four innings while stranding three baserunners. In the fifth, Cal Poly enjoyed successive two-out singles from sophomore catcher Kai Barrett and Clements before senior center fielder Noellah Ramos struck out to end the threat.
Fresno State then returned in the top of the sixth to go up 2-0 as shortstop Alesia Denby doubled home Mattson with two down.
After stranding two more to end the sixth inning, Cal Poly saw Clements – the Big West Conference's leading hitter with a .420 (50-for-119) mark – single for the fourth time with two down in the seventh. Ramos, however, grounded out to end the matchup.
Cal Poly resumes Big West action when hosting conference co-leader Long Beach State for a three-game, April 23-24 set. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 23.
