Freshman righthander Kate Judy (6-10) struck out six during Cal Poly's second-game victory as the Mustangs overturned a 3-0 deficit by scoring all five of their runs with two down. Sitting in eighth place in the conference standings three weeks ago, Cal Poly (16-22, 11-6) – behind its 10-game Big West winning streak, the program's lengthiest since taking 13 straight in 2009 – retained a share of third place alongside Hawai'i (17-15, 11-6), knocked Long Beach State (22-19, 12-5) from its previous share of first place and stayed three games behind leader Cal State Fullerton (31-15, 15-3) with 10 regular season matchups remaining.
During Saturday's opening 12-7 victory, Cal Poly senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman retired Long Beach State in order in the top of the first and the Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs to start the bottom half. Sargent, shortstop Lily Amos and first baseman Hailey Prahm followed with successive bases-loaded walks before second baseman Xiara Diaz singled up the middle to hand Cal Poly a 4-0 lead without an out.
Third baseman Mia Perez drew Cal Poly's fourth bases-loaded walk of the inning before left fielder Jessica Clements reached after a grounder back to Long Beach State righthanded reliever Shelby Frutoz bounced off the glove of catcher Rebekah Durazo. The miscue allowed Cal Poly's sixth run to score before Ramos contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly and Sargent enjoyed a two-run single. Lily Amos finally finalized the 65-pitch, 10-run first inning with an RBI single.
Long Beach State, however, recovered to take back three runs apiece in both the second and third innings, cutting Cal Poly's lead to 10-6. A two-out, run-scoring hit from Long Beach State first baseman Kyra Snyder in the top of the fourth then shortened the scoreline to 10-7.
Having conceded four Long Beach State runs after taking over for Allman with one down in the top half of the second, freshman righthander Paige Maier (4-1) retired the visitor side in order during the fifth, sixth and seventh, setting aside 10 straight to close the matchup and preserve Cal Poly's 10-7 lead.
Cal Poly completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as junior pinch hitter Sydney Frankenberger and sophomore catcher Kai Barrett supplied run-scoring runs for the 12-7 margin.
Of the 20 batters who registered a plate appearance in Saturday's opener, just one – Long Beach State shortstop Marissa Caballero – didn't reach base at least once. Game No. 1 featured 21 combined hits, 20 of which were singles.
During Saturday's second 5-3 victory, Judy retired Long Beach State in order to close the first before the visitors opened the scoring in the top of the second with left fielder Sara Olson singling home pinch runner Rylie Seip.
After Cal Poly stranded a baserunner to close the second, Long Beach State added two more runs in the third with Durazo contributing a run-scoring groundout before Snyder added an RBI single to push the advantage to 3-0.
Kept to just two hits through the opening three inning by Long Beach State starting righthander Sophia Fernandez, Cal Poly closed to within a run of tying the matchup in the fourth with Diaz first drawing a two-out walk, stealing second and scoring through a Perez single. Clements then produced an infield single to bring home Perez and trim Long Beach State's lead to 3-2.
Cal Poly eventually squared the scoreline an inning later as a two-out double to left center from Prahm scored Lily Amos from first base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cal Poly placed runners at the corner bases with two down. After Maddie Amos drew a full-count walk to load the bases, Sargent supplied the decisive hit, singling to left center to plate Ramos and Clements for the 5-3 final.
Cal Poly and Long Beach State complete the three-game series on Sunday, April 24 with a 1 p.m. matchup.
