Cal Poly Sweeps Aside Penn, Fresno State on Saturday

FULLERTON – A pair of two-run hits from sophomore catcher Kai Barrett (above) helped propel the Cal Poly softball team to an 8-0, five-inning victory against first-time opponent Penn during Saturday's doubleheader opener at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic. Cal Poly returned in game No. 2 to sweep the pair of matchups, leading wire-to-wire in a 5-2 victory against Fresno State.
During Saturday's opening victory against Penn (2-6), Cal Poly loaded the bases with one down in the bottom of the first inning before Quakers starting righthander Julia Longo (1-3) hit Mustang sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz to force home senior center fielder Noellah Ramos for the eventual winning run. Two batters later, freshman third baseman Caroline Allman produced a two-run double to further Cal Poly's lead to 3-0.
Cal Poly returned in the third to load the bases once more before a Penn fielding error first plated senior shortstop Maddie Amos. Barrett next supplied a two-run single to push Cal Poly's advantage to 6-0.
Barrett then added a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth, scoring sophomore pinch runner Ellie Yamashita and Allman for the walk-off, run-rule victory.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior lefthander Krystyna Allman (1-5) struck out nine Quakers and conceded just four hits. The nine-strikeout total was two shy of her career best, set against Saint Mary's on Feb. 14, 2020.
Against Penn, every starter in Cal Poly's lineup produced at least one hit.
During Saturday's second game versus Fresno State (3-16), Cal Poly jumped in front at the first opportunity as senior designated player Lily Amos followed a leadoff walk from freshman left fielder Jessica Clements with a two-out homer.
Cal Poly freshman starting righthander Paige Maier (1-1) – who tossed a complete-game, four-hitter – stranded a Bulldog baserunner in each of the first two innings before Fresno State scratched out its opening run during the bottom of the third with shortstop Alesia Denby hitting a leadoff homer.
The Mustangs, however, immediately grabbed the run back in the fourth as Caroline Allman followed sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent's one-out single with a run-scoring double.
Cal Poly stranded two of its six baserunners in the fifth before Fresno State cut its deficit to 3-2 in the bottom half through a Mustang fielding error.
Retired in order in the sixth, Cal Poly enjoyed a two-run homer from Maddie Amos in the seventh to complete the scoring. Maier stranded her seventh and final Fresno State runner in the bottom half to close the matchup.
Cal Poly resumes action when opening its 19-game home schedule at Bob Janssen Field with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Penn on Wednesday, March 9.
