Cal Poly Opens 2022 Season at SDSU Season Kickoff

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Welcoming back six positions starters, two pitchers and 14 total letterwinners from last year, the Cal Poly softball program opens the 2022 regular season with five games at the SDSU Season Kickoff. Cal Poly's 48th varsity season begins on Friday, Feb. 11 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader versus Boise State (20-25, 2021) and defending Horizon League champion UIC (29-23). Tournament play continues on Saturday, Feb. 12 versus Middle Tennessee (26-22) at 2 p.m. before Cal Poly closes its opening week on Sunday, Feb. 13 against Stanford (33-22) at 11:30 a.m. and host San Diego State (28-16) at 2 p.m. Stanford received four votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. Beginning with Friday's matchup against UIC and continuing versus Stanford, Cal Poly's 50-game schedule includes 10 games against program that qualified for the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

CAL POLY VERSUS SDSU SEASON KICKOFF OPPONENTS: Facing Boise State for the third successive season, Cal Poly split a neutral-site, Feb. 26, 2021 doubleheader with the Mustangs prevailing in the opener (2-0) before dropping game No. 2 (7-6). Boise State leads the all-time series, 3-2, since the first meeting between the two sides on Feb. 19, 2011 … Cal Poly defeated UIC, 4-1, in the only previous meeting on Feb. 25, 2007 in Cathedral City, Calif. … Cal Poly holds a 3-0 all-time series record versus Middle Tennessee, last handing the Blue Raiders a 6-1 setback on Feb. 9, 2018 at UCLA … Stanford owns a three-game winning streak against the Mustangs after sweeping a March 14, 2021 doubleheader at Cal Poly. The Mustangs last defeated Stanford on Feb. 25, 2018 (4-2) and trail in the all-time series, 18-12 … San Diego State has won six straight versus the Mustangs with Cal Poly's last series win a 2-1 triumph on March 6, 2011. San Diego State leads the all-time series, 22-9, dating to the first matchup on April 19, 1975.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Earning one first-place vote in the 2022 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish following Monday's release. The Mustangs, who finished seventh in the standings last year, earned 42 votes in Monday's poll to finish seven points behind Hawai'i and UC San Diego and one point ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton was selected first in the poll with 77 points and five of 10 first-place votes.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Four of Cal Poly's opening 15 games occur versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the preseason edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After facing Stanford (which received four votes in the preseason poll) on Feb. 13, the Mustang meet No. 3 UCLA (March 3), No. 21 Arizona State (March 4) and Fresno State (March 5) – also appearing in the receiving votes category – as part of the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic.
LOOKING AHEAD: Following an open weekend, Cal Poly returns to action at the Feb. 25-27 Silicon Valley Classic I. Cal Poly opens play on Friday, Feb. 25 with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at San Jose State. After facing Sacramento State on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., Cal Poly shifts action to Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 27 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader versus Utah State and the host Broncos.
