During Friday's season opener against Boise State (2-0), the Broncos opened the scoring with a three-run third inning before going up 5-0 in the fifth through a two-run homer from right fielder Eliyah Flores. Second baseman Jalen Ervin then ran Boise State's lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth with a two-out, run-scoring single.
Kept to five hits through the opening five innings by Boise State starting righthander Taylor Caudill, Cal Poly broke through for its first run during the bottom half of the sixth as senior designated player Lily Amos plated freshman left fielder Jessica Clements with a sacrifice fly.
Facing the 8-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh after Boise State scored twice in the top half, Cal Poly's opening two batters reached before senior pinch hitter Kianah Corey scored sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz with a single up the middle. After Clements singled with one down to load the bases, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos (above) tripled to cut Cal Poly's deficit to 8-5.
With Caudill knocked from the circle, Mustang senior shortstop Maddie Amos followed with a groundout that plated Ramos. Enjoying one of Cal Poly's 13 hits, Lily Amos next reached before right fielder Juju Sargent singled up the middle to score pinch runner Sydney Frankenberger and shorten Boise State's lead to 8-7.
Two pitches later, however, Diaz lined out to end the game.
During Friday's 1-0 setback against defending Horizon League champion UIC (1-0), Allman (0-1) – who struck out four – kept the Flames hitless through the opening three innings.
Despite producing six hits through the initial five innings, Cal Poly stranded six baserunners – included leaving the bases loaded to close the first.
UIC notched the game's only run in the top of the sixth as pinch hitter Mary Jones singled with two down to score third baseman Maica Ingles.
Cal Poly, meanwhile, stranded another baserunner to complete the sixth. In the seventh, a Clements sacrifice bunt pushed two Mustang baserunners into scoring position, but Ramos grounded out and Maddie Amos lined out to end the game.
Cal Poly (0-2) continues SDSU Season Kickoff action on Saturday, Feb. 12 versus Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m.
