SAN DIEGO – Sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent (above) belted her first collegiate home run on Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly softball program sustained its third one-run defeat in as many games this year, edged by Middle Tennessee at the SDSU Season Kickoff, 4-3.
Middle Tennessee grabbed the game's only lead in the top of the first inning as shortstop Laura Mealer, third baseman Claire Czajkowski and second baseman Lani Rodriguez each supplied run-scoring hits.
Held to one hit through the opening two innings, Cal Poly took a pair of runs back during the bottom of the third as a two-out single to left field from senior third baseman Maddie Amos brought home left fielder Jessica Clements and fellow freshman Malia Mah.
After Middle Tennessee doubled its lead through an RBI single from right fielder Amaya Harris in the top of the fourth, Cal Poly edged back to a one-run deficit during the bottom half as Sargent led off with her first career homer.
Having nearly bridged the gap, however, Cal Poly was limited to just two baserunners and kept hitless for the final three innings.
Relieving Cal Poly freshman starting righthander Kate Judy in the top of the first, senior lefthander Krystyna Allman conceded just one earned run and stranded the Middle Tennessee bases loaded in the top of the seventh to keep Cal Poly's deficit at 4-3.
Amos and Clements each produced a game high two hits for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly (0-3) closes SDSU Season Kickoff action on Sunday, Feb. 13 with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader against Stanford and the host Aztecs.
