SAN DIEGO – Held to four hits by Stanford, the Cal Poly softball program stranded seven baserunners and dropped its Sunday opener at the SDSU Season Kickoff to the Cardinal, 5-0. Cal Poly then closed its season-opening tournament with a 5-2 loss to host San Diego State after Aztecs catcher Danielle Romanello hit a pair of two-run homers.
During Sunday's opener against Stanford, Cal Poly senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (0-2) allowed just two hits through the opening three innings before the Cardinal produced the eventual winning runs in the bottom of the fourth as center fielder Kaitlyn Lim lined a two-run single.
Stanford (4-1) then added two runs in the fifth before a two-out, run-scoring triple from shortstop Emily Young completed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
Offensively, Cal Poly stranded two baserunners in the top of the first after shortstop Maddie Amos and designated player Lily Amos (above) recorded back-to-back two-out singles. Cal Poly left two more runners on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but failed to advance anyone past second base against Stanford starting righthander Alana Vawter (2-1).
During Sunday's SDSU Season Kickoff finale versus the Aztecs, Cal Poly opened the scoring in the top of the first as a two-out single up the middle from Lily Amos plated freshman left fielder Jessica Clements for the 1-0 lead.
Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Kate Judy (0-3) limited San Diego State to a single to close the first before the Aztecs surged ahead during the bottom of the second after Romanello hit her first two-run homer to left field.
Following Romanello's initial homer, Judy kept San Diego State hitless between the third and fourth innings. The Aztecs, however, produced a third run in the fifth as a groundout from third baseman Makena Brocki scored left fielder Nicole Siess.
San Diego State completed its scoring in the sixth as Romanello hit her second two-run homer.
Cal Poly, which stranded seven further baserunners against two San Diego State pitchers, added the game's final run in the top of the seventh as senior center fielder Noellah Ramos scored sophomore pinch hitter Sydney Frankenberger with a two-out single.
Cal Poly (0-5) returns to action at the Feb. 25-27 SVC Classic I, co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara. Cal Poly's tournament schedule begins with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 25.
