Cal Poly Resumes Action at Feb. 25-27 SVC Classic I

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following a 12-day break, the Cal Poly softball program resumes play and seeks its first victory of the year when facing four separate opponents at the Feb. 25-27 SVC Classic I, co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara. Cal Poly's five-game tournament stretch begins on Friday, Feb. 25 with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at San Jose State (4-5). After facing Sacramento State (3-6) on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m., Cal Poly shifts action to Santa Clara on Sunday, Feb. 27 for a 9 a.m. doubleheader versus Utah State (3-5) and the host Broncos (4-6). Cal Poly's only previous appearance at the Silicon Valley Classic came in 2020 with the Mustangs recording a 4-1 mark that included a 4-3 win at Santa Clara and 3-1 defeat at San Jose State.

CAL POLY VERSUS SVC CLASSIC I OPPONENTS: San Jose State has won the last five matchups versus Cal Poly, last edging the Mustangs, 3-1, on Feb. 21, 2020 at the Silicon Valley Classic. Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 15-11, dating to the first meeting on Feb. 27, 1988 … Cal Poly has won five of the last seven matchups with Sacramento State dating to 2013, through the Hornets prevailed in the last meeting on Feb. 17, 2018 in Cathedral City, Calif., 4-1. Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 43-38, dating to the first matchup on April 30, 1976 … having first met Utah State on March 24, 1978, Cal Poly leads the series, 22-17. Former Big West Conference opponents from 1997-2005, Cal Poly and Utah State last met during the 2019 season, splitting two games at the Mustang Classic … Cal Poly has won 14 straight decisions against Santa Clara since 2006 to increase its series lead to 45-14.
CLOSE, BUT …: Three of Cal Poly's five defeats this season have occurred by one run. Cal Poly's five losses have occurred by just 2.2 runs per setback.
CLEMENTS DEBUT A HIT: Without an appearance during her first season on campus last spring, freshman left fielder Jessica Clements finished Cal Poly's opening week as the program's second leading hitter with a .556 (10-for-18) mark. Cal Poly's early leader for hits (10), at-bats (18), runs (four) and multi-hit games (three), Clements produced a career best four at San Diego State (Feb. 13).
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Three of Cal Poly's opening 13 games occur versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the Feb. 15 edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After falling against Stanford (receiving votes) on Feb. 13, the Mustangs next meet No. 6 UCLA (March 3) and No. 22 Arizona State (March 4) as part of the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Earning one first-place vote in the 2022 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish following Monday's release. The Mustangs, who finished seventh in the standings last year, earned 42 votes in Monday's poll to finish seven points behind Hawai'i and UC San Diego and one point ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton was selected first in the poll with 77 points and five of 10 first-place votes.
LOOKING AHEAD: Cal Poly returns to the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic after a two-year hiatus, opening this season's edition on Thursday, March 3 against No. 3 UCLA (10 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount (3 p.m.). Action continues on Saturday, March 4 against No. 21 Arizona State (3 p.m.) before Cal Poly closes play on Saturday, March 5 with a 12 noon doubleheader against first-time opponent Penn and Fresno State. Cal Poly is a combined 3-5 in two previous visits (2018, 2020) to the Judi Garman Classic.
