Cal Poly Drops Pair at SJSU to Open SVC Classic I
2/25/2022 8:40:00 PM | Softball
SAN JOSE – Opening the SVC Classic I with a Friday doubleheader at co-host San Jose State, the Cal Poly softball program sustained its fourth run-one run defeat of the season, falling at Spartan Softball Complex in eight innings, 2-1. Cal Poly also dropped game No. 2, falling 4-1 despite outhitting the hosts, 11-5.
During Cal Poly's Friday tournament opener, San Jose State took a 1-0 lead at the first opportunity as third baseman Alyssa Graham singled to lead off before stealing second, moving to third on a throwing error from Mustang sophomore catcher Kai Barrett and scoring through a double steal attempt.
Offensively, Cal Poly enjoyed hits in each of the first three innings, but failed to advance a baserunner past second until the top half of the fifth as senior shortstop Maddie Amos (above) followed a one-out single from freshman left fielder Jessica Clements with a run-scoring hit up the middle of the infield.
In the circle, Cal Poly senior lefthander Krystyna Allman allowed six hits, but stranded seven San Jose State baserunners before giving way to freshman righthander Kate Judy (0-4) after the seventh.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the eighth, Cal Poly was retired in order. San Jose State started the bottom half with center fielder Jules Ronquillo on second before catcher Trenity Edwards drew a walk. The next Spartan, shortstop Jocelyn Vidal, attempted a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error from Judy allowed Ronquillo to score the game-winning run.
During game No. 2, Judy – making her fourth career start – retired eight of the first 10 Spartans she faced before Graham homered down the left field line.
Cal Poly, meanwhile, produced eight hits against San Jose State starting righthander Lacie Ham (2-3) through the opening five innings, but stranded two baserunners apiece in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
San Jose State then added three runs with two down in the bottom half of the fifth, first doubling the lead through a Mustang scoring error before furthering it to 4-0 as Vidal produced a two-run single.
Cal Poly stranded one more baserunner in the sixth, following a leadoff triple from sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent with three successive outs. The Mustangs pushed across their lone run of the matchup with two down in the seventh as Amos doubled home senior center fielder Noellah Ramos.
Cal Poly continues SVC Classic I play on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a 3 p.m. matchup versus Sacramento State.
