SAN JOSE – The Cal Poly softball program erased a four-run deficit against Sacramento State Saturday afternoon, but the Hornets pushed across the decisive run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Mustangs sustained their fifth one-run defeat of the season with a 6-5 setback at the SVC Classic I, co-hosted by San Jose State.
Facing a 5-1 disadvantage heading into the fifth inning, Cal Poly received a leadoff double from sophomore catcher Kai Barrett before freshman left fielder Jessica Clements singled. Senior center fielder Noellah Ramos (above) followed with a two-run triple before scoring herself after a single by senior shortstop Maddie Amos. Sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger then reached through a Hornets field error – a miscue that plated Amos and leveled the scoreline, 5-5.
Sacramento State, however, produced the eventual winning run at the first opportunity as left fielder Samantha Parish doubled with two down to score right fielder Carley Morfey.
After stranding two of their eight baserunners in the sixth, Cal Poly was retired in order during the seventh to close the matchup.
Sacramento State took an initial 3-0 lead Saturday during the bottom half of the first through designated player Lexie Webb's fourth homer of the season.
Taking over for Cal Poly senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman to begin the second, freshman righthander Kate Judy stranded the Sacramento State bases loaded to close the inning, keeping the Hornet lead at 3-0.
Cal Poly grabbed a run back in the top of the fourth as senior designated player Lily Amos followed a leadoff single from Maddie Amos with a run-scoring double.
Sacramento State next furthered its lead to 5-1 during the bottom of the fourth after third baseman Lewa Day hit a two-run homer to left field.
Cal Poly completes SVC Classic I action on Sunday, Feb. 27 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader versus Utah State and Santa Clara.
