SANTA CLARA – Opening a Sunday doubleheader versus Utah State to close action at the SVC Classic I, the Cal Poly softball program committed four errors, stranded eight and never led in a 6-4 setback against Utah State. Despite a complete-game, four-hitter from senior lefthander Krystyna Allman, Cal Poly also dropped its second game to co-host Santa Clara after the Broncos produced the decisive run in the bottom of the sixth, edging the Mustangs, 1-0.
During Sunday's opener against Utah State (6-8), the Aggies scratched out the opening run during the top of the first inning after shortstop Lexi Orozco brought home center fielder Mazie Macfarlane with a sacrifice fly.
Cal Poly equalized at the first opportunity as senior designated player Lily Amos doubled in freshman left fielder Jessica Clements with two out in the bottom half of the first.
Utah State, however, posted a four-run second inning with three Mustang errors in the inning contributing to a 5-1 Aggies lead.
Held hitless during the second and third, Cal Poly grabbed single runs back in the fourth and fifth innings to shorten the deficit to 5-3.
Orozco, however, homered to lead off the sixth, stretching Utah State's lead to 6-3. Cal Poly received a run-scoring single from sophomore catcher Kai Barrett (above) in the bottom half of the sixth, but was retired in order during the seventh to close the matchup.
Making her first career start for Cal Poly, freshman righthander Paige Maier (0-1) sustained the loss, despite conceding just two earned runs.
During Sunday's second game against co-host Santa Clara (8-9), Allman (0-3) kept the Broncos to just two hits through the first five innings.
Despite producing six hits through the opening six innings, Cal Poly stranded five runners – including leaving Mustangs on third base in the top of the second and third.
Scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth, Santa Clara found the winning run with third baseman Emma Bickford singling with one down before stealing second and reaching third on a wild pitch. Broncos first baseman Sammy Needham then doubled to right center field, plating Bickford for the 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Cal Poly sophomore pinch hitter Juju Sargent reached with two down following a Santa Clara error. However, Mustang freshman third baseman Malia Mah – who enjoyed a career high two hits – flew out to end the game as Cal Poly saw a 14-game winning streak versus Santa Clara snapped.
Cal Poly (0-10) returns to action with five games at the March 3-6, Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic. Cal Poly's tournament schedule begins on Thursday, March 3 against No. 6 UCLA (10 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount (3:30 p.m.).
