Cal Poly Faces Pair of Ranked Foes at Judi Garman Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Seeking its first victory of the season, the Cal Poly softball program faces a pair of ranked opponents among its five foes at the March 3-6, Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic. Action from Anderson Family Field begins on Thursday, March 3 for Cal Poly (0-10), which faces No. 5 UCLA (12-3) at 10 a.m. and Loyola Marymount (8-8) at 3:30 p.m. After squaring off with No. 23 Arizona State (9-4) on Friday, March 4 at 3 p.m., Cal Poly closes tournament play on Sunday, March 5 with a 12 noon doubleheader versus first-time opponent Penn (2-3) and Fresno State (1-12). Cal Poly is a combined 3-5 in two previous visits (2018, 2020) to the Judi Garman Classic.

CAL POLY VERSUS JUDI GARMAN CLASSIC OPPONENTS: Cal Poly's third ever opponent as a varsity program, UCLA first met the Mustangs on April 17, 1975. The Bruins, however, hold a 25-game winning streak versus Cal Poly and a 32-4 all-time series edge. Cal Poly's last victories against UCLA came on April 6, 1997 as the Mustangs swept a home doubleheader … Loyola Marymount holds an 11-6 series advantage versus Cal Poly, having won the last six decisions. The Lions prevailed in the last matchup, 3-2, to open the 2021 season … Cal Poly's lone win against Arizona State occurred during the first meeting between the two sides on March 4, 1980 (1-0, 10 innings). The Sun Devils have won the remaining eight meetings, most recently on Feb. 24, 2019 in Cathedral City, Calif. … Cal Poly has never previously faced Penn. The Mustangs most recent bout with an Ivy League opponent came on March 16, 2019 as Cal Poly edged Dartmouth in Los Angeles, 5-4 … Fresno State has won the last five matchups with Cal Poly and leads the all-time series, 46-14. Cal Poly's last win against the Bulldogs was a 2-0 road victory on Feb. 26, 2017.
CLOSE, BUT …: Six of Cal Poly's 10 defeats this season have occurred by one run. Overall, Cal Poly's 10 losses have come by just 1.9 runs per setback with only one defeat – a 5-0 decision against Stanford – occurring by more than three runs.
CLEMENTS DEBUT A HIT: Having hit safely in nine of 10 games – including career best four-hit outings against San Diego State (Feb. 13) and San Jose State (Feb. 25) – freshman left fielder Jessica Clements ranks second among Big West Conference players with a team leading .500 (18-for-36) batting average and 18 hits. The Feb. 14 Big West Freshman Player of the Week honoree, Clements has started all 10 games and already produced five multi-hit outings.
AMOS ROUNDING OFF STANDOUT CAREER: Cal Poly's co-leading run producer with six RBI and second leading hitter with a .333 (12-for-36) mark, senior shortstop Maddie Amos takes a .297 (85-for-286) career batting average into the Judi Garman Classic. Amos, who has enjoyed a pair of three-hit games this season, has started 100 of a possible 119 games during her career – including 45 straight between this year and last.
THE COMPANY YOU KEEP: Three of Cal Poly's opening 13 games occur versus programs ranked or receiving votes in the Feb. 15 edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. After falling against Stanford (receiving votes) on Feb. 13, the Mustangs next meet No. 5 UCLA (March 3) and No. 23 Arizona State (March 4) as part of the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic.
CAL POLY SELECTED SIXTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Earning one first-place vote in the 2022 Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Cal Poly was selected for a sixth-place finish following Monday's release. The Mustangs, who finished seventh in the standings last year, earned 42 votes in Monday's poll to finish seven points behind Hawai'i and UC San Diego and one point ahead of UC Santa Barbara. Cal State Fullerton was selected first in the poll with 77 points and five of 10 first-place votes.
