Reyes Four-Hitter Clinches UC Davis Series Victory for Cal Poly
5/9/2021 3:08:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS – A two-run single from senior first baseman Hailey Martin and three-run homer by junior designated player Lily Amos in the top of the fifth broke a scoreless stalemate and senior righthander Danielle Reyes (above) earned her second career victory in as many afternoons as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series versus UC Davis with a 5-1 victory at La Rue Field.
Having won five of its last six series against UC Davis (17-23, 11-10), Cal Poly's Sunday win also secured the program's first road series victory since taking two of three games from UC Davis April 29-30, 2017.
During Sunday's matchup, Cal Poly (12-20, 6-15) collected three hits through the opening four innings against UC Davis starting righthander Kenedi Brown (11-11), but twice stranded a baserunner on third.
Meanwhile, Reyes (2-0) – in just her fourth appearance of the season – faced the minimum number of UC Davis hitters possible through the opening four innings. After retiring seven successive Aggies to open the game, Reyes allowed a single to third baseman Libbie McMahan with one down in the third before forcing catcher Katie Steffen-Brune into an inning-ending double play.
The same sequence closed the fourth inning as a one-out single from shortstop Isabella Leon was followed with first baseman Sarah Starks lining into a double play as Reyes went through the opening 12 spots without stranding a baserunner.
Cal Poly returned in the fifth to notch the eventual winning runs. With freshman second baseman Juju Sargent on second following a leadoff base hit and sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Noellah Ramos, freshman right fielder Sydney Frankenberger drew a four-pitch walk before junior shortstop Maddie Amos singled to load the bases. Martin then produced her two-run base hit before Lily Amos delivered her third homer of the season to hand Cal Poly a 5-0 lead.
UC Davis scored its lone run in the fifth as left fielder Leah Polson brought home center fielder Marissa Jauregui with a one-out sacrifice fly.
Reyes then stranded the UC Davis bases loaded to close the sixth before retiring the Aggies in order in the seventh.
Mustang freshman catcher Kai Barrett and Sargent each finished with a game leading two hits.
Cal Poly completes its 2021 schedule when hosting UC San Diego for a May 14-15, three-game series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 14.
