Cal Poly Closes Season with May 14-15 Home Series versus UC San Diego

MUSTANGS DIAMOND WEEKLY SERIES PROGRAM
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program closes the 2021 regular season and faces first-year Big West Conference member UC San Diego for the first time in 27 seasons when hosting the Tritons for a three-game, May 14-15 series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 14 before both programs close the year with an 11 a.m. matchup on Sunday, May 15. Cal Poly (12-20, 6-15), facing UC San Diego for the first time as a Big West opponent and since Feb. 13, 1994, returns home after winning its first road series in four years as the Mustangs took two of three matchups at UC Davis (May 14-15). UC San Diego (14-18, 10-11), making its Division I debut this season, sits fourth in the Big West standings and just a game behind third-place UC Davis (17-23, 11-10). The Tritons head into the series with a five-game winning streak after sweeping CSUN (May 7-8) and taking the final two games of their series versus UC Riverside (May 1-2).

CAL POLY VERSUS UC SAN DIEGO: Dating to a road doubleheader sweep of the Tritons on Feb. 7, 1987, Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 18-0. The two programs last meet on Feb. 13, 1994 as Cal Poly swept a road doubleheader during its final season as a Division II program.
CLOSE, BUT: Including a 1-0 loss and 6-5 win to close the April 9-10 series against Hawai'i, 12 of Cal Poly's 32 games this season – 38 percent – have been decided by one run with the Mustangs holding a 4-8 record in those decisions.
MARTIN PLACING FINISHING TOUCHES ON STANDOUT CAREER: Hitting .539 (21-for-39) during Cal Poly's last 12 games, senior first baseman Hailey Martin ranks second among Big West players with 11 doubles, fourth with a .482 on-base percentage and sixth with a .404 (38-for-94) batting average while also leading Cal Poly with 38 hits and 11 multi-hit games. Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week (April 13) after batting .923 (12-for-13) during Cal Poly's four-game home series against Hawai'i (April 9-10), Martin enters the UC San Diego series having batted safely in 17 of her last 19 games. A .317 (182-for-575) career hitter, Martin ranks third in program history with 40 doubles, sixth with 103 RBI, 11th with 182 hits and 13th with 56 walks and 247 total bases. A starter in 199 of a possible 214 of Cal Poly's games since her 2017 freshman season – including all 32 this year – Martin is a .981 career fielder with just 26 errors in 1,342 total career chances.
CENTER (FIELDER) OF SUCCESS: Having never batted higher than .262 during her previous three seasons, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos takes a .343 (36-for-105) mark into Cal Poly's May 14-15 series versus UC San Diego. Ranked second in the lineup with 36 hits and 10 multi-hit games – including three-hit efforts versus Saint Mary's (March 6), at UC Riverside (March 27) and at UC Davis (May 8) – Ramos has hit safely in 23 of 32 outings. Ramos, who has struck out just nine times in 105 at-bats this year, is also third in the lineup in batting average and runs (18). A starter in 152 of 156 appearances for Cal Poly since her 2018 freshman season, Ramos is a .969 career fielder.
AMOS'S EXCEPTIONAL SEASON: A career .293 (77-for-262) batter after ranking fourth in Cal Poly's lineup with a .330 (36-for-109) batting average, junior infielder Maddie Amos leads the Mustangs with eight multi-RBI games and 60 total bases while sitting second with 13 extra-base hits. Also ninth among Big West hitters with five home runs, Amos has hit safely in 26 of the program's 32 games.
AMOS'S CAREER YEAR: Hitting 62 points higher than her previous career best for season batting average, junior right fielder Lily Amos's .371 (23-for-62) mark remains second in Cal Poly's lineup. Owner of one of Cal Poly's two four-hit games this season after finishing 4-for-4 during the series opener at Long Beach State (April 24), Amos takes a .298 (67-for-225) career batting average into the program's May 14-15 series versus UC San Diego.
