Cal Poly Opens Final Series of Season with Friday Doubleheader Split
5/14/2021 4:10:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior pinch hitter Kianah Corey's two-run double in the fourth provided the Cal Poly softball program a brief lead during Friday afternoon's series opener against UC San Diego, but the Tritons scored the decisive run in the top of the eighth to secure a 3-2 win at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly, however, rebounded in game No. 2
During Friday's opening game, each program collected four hits apiece through the first three innings, but the matchup remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when, with one down, UC San Diego left fielder Deena Pederson singled, stole second, advanced to third through a wild pitch and scored after a fly ball from catcher Kinley Kyro tipped off the glove of Mustang senior center fielder Noellah Ramos.
Cal Poly (13-21, 7-16), however, took over the lead at its first opportunity, loading the bases with one down in the fourth before Corey lined a double off the top of the center field wall to bring home freshman pinch runner Sydney Frankenberger and freshman catcher Kai Barrett (above) for the 2-1 advantage.
Retired in order during the fifth, UC San Diego (15-19, 11-12) returned in the sixth to tie the matchup as Pederson followed a one-out double from second baseman Isabel Lavrov with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Both teams were retired in order during the seventh before UC San Diego notched the winning run in the top of eighth as first baseman Bobbi Aguirre drew a leadoff walk before pinch runner Kaleigh Lane stole second and reached third through a passed ball ahead of an RBI single by designated player Gabby Williams.
Playing just its second extra-inning game of the season and first since the Feb. 12 season opener at Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly stranded one of its seven baserunners in the bottom of the eighth to close the matchup.
Barrett led Cal Poly with two hits in the opener.
UC San Diego's win was its first against Cal Poly in 19 all-time matchups. The two programs last met on Feb. 13, 1994 while competing at the Division II level.
During Friday's second matchup, Cal Poly took the opening lead in the bottom half of the second as senior left fielder Jackie Napoli followed a leadoff Barrett double with a two-out, run-scoring single.
UC San Diego equalized in the top of the third as center fielder Keila Bosinger plated shortstop Danica Kazakoff with a one-out single. Cal Poly, however, struck back with two more runs during the bottom of the third. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin regained Cal Poly's lead with a one-out double to bring home Ramos. The next Mustang in the lineup, junior right fielder Lily Amos, then doubled home Martin for a 3-1 lead.
With both teams scoreless during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, UC San Diego finalized the scoring in the seventh as right fielder Sherriah Harrinton led off with a solo homer.
Pitching the fourth and fifth innings, senior righthander Dakota Casper (1-2) earned her first victory of the year.
