Cal Poly Falls to UC San Diego in 2021 Season Finale
5/15/2021 2:32:00 PM | Softball
UC San Diego (16-19, 12-12) took the lead with the game's first opportunity, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first inning as right fielder Sherriah Harrington delivered an RBI double before second baseman Isabel Lavrov produced a two-run single.
Stranding a baserunner to close the first, Cal Poly jumped onto the scoreboard with two down in the second as Jeffries belted the first pitch she saw from UC San Diego starting righthander Gabby Williams (6-1) over the right center field wall. In cutting Cal Poly's deficit to 3-1, Jeffries became just the eighth player in program history to hit at least 10 career homers.
The Tritons, however, took the run back with two down in the third as Lavrov brought home pinch runner Kelley Renner with a base hit through the right side of the infield. UC San Diego then ran the lead to 5-1 with Lavrov scoring on a double steal attempt.
UC San Diego added two more runs in the fourth while Cal Poly stranded two to close the inning, the Mustangs trailing 7-1 heading into the fifth. Cal Poly stranded another baserunner there – their eighth to date – before pulling the final run back in the sixth as center fielder Noellah Ramos grounded out to plate senior third baseman Hannah Ramelot.
UC San Diego completed the scoring with a four-run seventh.
