DAVIS – Senior first baseman Hailey Martin (above) homered, but the Cal Poly softball program committed five errors as the Mustangs opened a three-game series versus UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field with a 12-4, five-inning setback. Cal Poly, however, rebounded in game No. 2 as, powered by a seven-run third inning that included freshman catcher Kai Barrett's first career homer, the Mustangs rallied past UC Davis, 12-9.
During Saturday's opening matchup, UC Davis (17-22, 11-9) grabbed the game's only lead in the bottom of the first inning as shortstop Isabella Leon doubled home second baseman Sommer Kisling with one down. A Cal Poly throwing error later led to the second UC Davis run before left fielder Leah Polson singled up the middle with two outs to score center fielder Marissa Jauregui and hand the Aggies a 3-0 advantage.
Cal Poly (11-20, 5-15) took two runs back in the top of the second as Martin followed a leadoff single from junior shortstop Maddie Amos with her second homer of the season.
UC Davis, however, reclaimed the three-run cushion during the bottom half of the second with two Mustang errors and a wild pitch from Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (5-12) contributing to a 5-2 UC Davis lead.
The Mustangs added another run in the fourth as Amos scored again through a one-out single to center field by senior designated player Shelby Jeffries. UC Davis though increased the lead to 9-3 during the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times through two more Mustang errors and a two-run Polson single.
The Mustangs added their final run in the top of the fifth with Amos reaching on a fielding error by Aggies right fielder Sarah Nakahara – a miscue that allowed freshman pinch runner Sydney Frankenberger to cross the plate and shorten Cal Poly's deficit to 9-4.
UC Davis placed the game in run-rule territory with three final runs in the bottom half of the fifth as a two-run single from first baseman Sarah Starks closed the 12-4 Aggies victory.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly was retired in order by UC Davis starting righthander Taylor Fitzgerald in the first and second innings before taking a 7-0 lead in the top half of the third. Freshman second baseman Juju Sargent struck the opening blow, following senior left fielder Jackie Napoli's one-out single with a run-scoring hit. Maddie Amos, Martin and junior designated player Lily Amos each followed with run-scoring hits before Barrett unloaded her first collegiate home run to center field to complete Cal Poly's seven-run effort.
UC Davis, however, answered with a four-run bottom half of the third. Backed by two-run hits from Starks and Polson, UC Davis then scored five more times in the fourth to assume a 9-7 advantage.
Cal Poly though returned with three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead for certain. A walk and two singles through the first three spots in the lineup allowed Cal Poly to load the bases before Martin scored on a wild pitch from righthander Kenedi Brown. After Brown retired the next two Mustangs, junior pinch hitter Kianah Corey singled to plate Barrett and Lily Amos and hand Cal Poly the 10-9 lead.
Cal Poly then added single runs during the sixth (a team leading fifth homer from Maddie Amos) and seventh (a run-scoring single by senior center fielder Noellah Ramos) to secure the 12-9 victory.
Ramos and Barrett each finished with a game high three hits for Cal Poly.
Pitching four innings of relief and allowing just one hit while striking out three Aggies, senior righthander Danielle Reyes (1-0) earned her first win in a Cal Poly uniform.
