Cal Poly Swept by Big West Leader Cal State Fullerton in Saturday Doubleheader

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program was held to two hits during the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader versus Big West Conference leader Cal State Fullerton as the Mustangs fell in five innings, 10-0. Propelled by a five-run fifth inning, Cal State Fullerton also took game No. 2, 15-2, matching a Cal Poly program record for opponent runs in a single game.
During Saturday's opening matchup, Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (5-11) kept the Titans (34-12, 18-0) to solitary singles during both the first and second innings before two Mustang errors in the third – the second of which saw catcher Kai Barrett drop a throw at home plate which allowed third baseman Hannah Becerra to score – helped Cal State Fullerton take an initial 2-0 lead.
Cal Poly (10-19, 4-14), meanwhile, was limited to one hit during the opening three innings by Cal State Fullerton righthander Sophie Frost (18-3) as freshman second baseman Xiara Diaz (above) tripled with two down in the second. Cal Poly's best chance to break through against Frost came in the fourth as senior first baseman Hailey Martin doubled with one out before senior designated player Shelby Jeffries drew a walk. Frost, however, forced a lineout from Diaz before freshman catcher Kai Barrett grounded out to end the threat.
Cal State Fullerton then placed the game in run-rule territory with an eight-run fifth inning that included a leadoff home run and two-run double from right fielder Kelsie Whitmore.
Cal Poly, which stranded six baserunners in the opener, left two on in the fifth to close the shortened game.
During Saturday's second game, Cal State Fullerton took a 3-0 lead after just three batters. Jeffries, Cal Poly's game No. 2 starter, walked center fielder Megan Delgadillo to open the matchup before Whitmore followed with a run-scoring single. Bacerra then hit her 12th homer of the season over the left field fence. Jeffries retired the next two Titans before Valenzuela doubled and second baseman KK Humphreys hit her eighth homer of 2021 as Cal State Fullerton departed the top of the first up, 5-0.
Cal Poly responded with its only runs of the series during the bottom half. After shortstop Maddie Amos reached on a fielder's choice and right fielder Lily Amos was hit by Cal State Fullerton starting righthander Dani Martinez (3-0), freshman second baseman Xiara Diaz delivered a two-run double down the left field line.
Cal State Fullerton, however, took back both runs during the top of the second as Whitmore homered once more for a 7-2 lead.
After Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded to close the second, the Titans added five more runs in the third, taking a 12-2 lead after Whitmore hit her third homer – a three-run shot – of the afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton added its final three runs in the fifth for the 15-2 scoreline.
