Cal Poly on Downside of High-Scoring Friday Pair versus Hawai’i
4/9/2021 6:31:00 PM | Softball
During Friday's opening matchup, Hawai'i (8-7, 7-4) loaded the bases with one down during the top of the first inning against Cal Poly starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (3-7) before second baseman Maya Nakamura delivered a two-run single up the middle to hand the Rainbow Wahine the game's only lead.
Hawai'i doubled its lead in the second through a two-run homer from left fielder Bree Soma. The Rainbow Wahine then went up 6-0 in the third with Soma first producing a two-out single to plate Nakamura. On the sequence, Cal Poly sophomore catcher Kai Barrett attempted to cut down Soma advancing to third, but her throw tipped off the glove of junior shortstop Maddie Amos with the error allowing pinch runner Mackenzie La Neve to score.
In the circle, Hawai'i starting righthander Jetta Nannen (4-4) faced just one Mustang hitter over the minimum through the opening two innings, holding Cal Poly hitless until Barrett doubled to lead off the bottom half of the third.
Hawai'i added three more runs in the top of the fourth to go up, 9-0. Cal Poly broke through against Nannen during the bottom half of the fourth as the Mustangs strung together three successive singles with one down before senior third baseman Hannah Ramelot plated Amos.
Cal Poly (8-13, 3-8) then struck for a five-run fifth with sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz and Amos enjoying run-scoring hits before junior right fielder Lily Amos delivered her second home run of the season – a three-run shot – to trim Hawai'i's lead to 9-6.
The Mustangs, however, were held hitless in the sixth before stranding two baserunners in the seventh to close the game. Hawai'i added the game's final run in the top of the seventh.
The 28 combined hits were one shy of the Cal Poly program record for total hits in a game while Hawai'i's 16 hits were two short of the program opponent single game record. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin (above) and Lily Amos both recorded a game high three hits for Cal Poly.
During Friday's second game, Cal Poly grabbed the initial lead during the bottom half of the second as a two-out single from starting senior righthander Shelby Jeffries (2-3) plated center fielder Noellah Ramos.
Hawai'i, however, tied the game at the first opportunity as Nakamura led off the second with a home run off the left field foul pole. With two down later in the inning, center fielder Brittnee Rossi handed Hawai'i a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring single to right center.
The Rainbow Wahine then added four runs in the top of the third through three run-scoring hits and a bases-loaded walk to further the lead to 6-1.
Cal Poly returned in the bottom half of the third to take back four runs, trimming Hawai'i's lead to 6-5 through five hits and two Rainbow Wahine errors.
The Mustangs, however, committed two errors themselves in the top of the fourth with the miscues contributing to three more Hawai'i runs and a 9-5 Rainbow Wahine lead.
Cal Poly still trailed, 11-6, heading into the bottom of the sixth before Maddie Amos swatted her team leading fourth homer of the year – a three-run effort to left center – that dropped Hawai'i's lead to 11-9.
The Mustangs, however, were held scoreless during the bottom of the seventh with Diaz lining into a double play to end the game.
Martin, who finished 7-for-7 during the doubleheader, added four further hits in game No. 2.
Cal Poly and Hawai'i close the four-game series with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 10. With each Big West series consisting of three games, the second game of the doubleheader will not count toward the conference standings.
