SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior lefthander Krystyna Allman's complete-game effort included five strikeouts, but Hawai'i scored the decisive run with its first two batters of the game as the Cal Poly softball program dropped its Saturday doubleheader opener versus the Rainbow Wahine, 1-0. Cal Poly, however, recovered to take the second game, 6-5, as senior Shelby Jeffries (above) provided the winning margin, singling with the bases loaded during the bottom of the seventh to bring home sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz.
With Cal Poly and Hawai'i having played twice Friday, Saturday's opener closed the three-game series that counted in the Big West Conference standings. Saturday's second matchup was played as a non-conference game.
During Saturday's opening matchup, Hawai'i (9-8, 8-4) grabbed the game's only lead at the first opportunity as catcher Ka'ena Keliinoi followed a leadoff single from center fielder Brittnee Rossi with a run-scoring double.
Offensively, Cal Poly (9-14, 3-9) saw its first seven hitters retired in order by Hawai'i starting righthander Jetta Nannen (5-4). Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett doubled with one down in the third, but the Mustangs stranded two baserunners to close the inning.
After conceding Hawai'i's opening run, Allman (3-8) kept the Rainbow Wahine to just one hit between the second and fourth innings. She stranded two baserunners in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more during the seventh to hold Hawai'i to its lone run, eight total hits and preserve a one-run deficit.
During the bottom of the seventh, Cal Poly received successive one-out singles from first baseman Hailey Martin and Jeffries before junior right fielder Lily Amos drew a four-pitch walk. Nannen, however, struck out senior third baseman Hannah Ramelot and forced a fly out from Barrett to end the matchup.
During Saturday's second matchup, Hawai'i once again took the opening lead in the top of the first as shortstop Nawai Kaupe plated Rossi with a one-out sacrifice fly.
Held to solitary hits by Jeffries – Cal Poly's game No. 2 starter – during both the second and third innings, Hawai'i took advantage of two Cal Poly fielding errors in the top of the fourth to add its second run.
Limited to two hits through the opening three innings by Hawai'i starting righthander Ashley Murphy, Cal Poly broke onto the scoreboard during the bottom half of the fourth with Jeffries first singling to left center to bring home junior shortstop Maddie Amos. Cal Poly later loaded the bases and, with two down, junior pinch hitter Kianah Corey emptied them with a bases-clearing double into the left field gap that provided the Mustangs a 4-2 advantage.
Hawai'i, however, squared the game at its first opportunity. Kaupe first cut Cal Poly's lead to a single run, following a one-out triple from third baseman Cheeks Ramos with a run-scoring single up the middle. After Jeffries struck out second baseman Maya Nakamura, Cal Poly's third error of the game contributed to Hawai'i's fourth run.
Cal Poly though regained the lead during the bottom half of the fifth as Martin lined her third double of the series into left center to bring home Diaz for the 5-4 edge.
Hawai'i re-tied the scoreline in the top half of the seventh with first baseman Dallas Millwood following a leadoff double by Nakamura with a run-scoring hit.
Cal Poly, however, untied the game in the bottom half, utilizing two hits and a Hawai'i throwing error to load the bases with no outs before Jeffries delivered the walk-off single.
Pitching the final one and one-third innings for Cal Poly, Allman earned the victory.
Idle for the April 17-18 scheduled competition dates, Cal Poly resumes play with a three-game, April 24-25 series at Long Beach State. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 24.
