4/24/2021 3:26:00 PM | Softball
LONG BEACH – Junior lefthander Krystyna Allman scattered seven hits and senior designated player Shelby Jeffries punctuated the Cal Poly softball program's Saturday doubleheader opener at Long Beach State with a two-run homer as the Mustangs opened a three-game series and snapped the host's 11-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory. Cal Poly, however, dropped the second game, 9-3, after committing three errors and with Long Beach State scoring seven times during the final two innings to place the game out of reach.
During Saturday's opening 5-1 victory at LBSU Softball Complex, Long Beach State (21-6, 15-2) struck the game's opening run in the bottom of the first as third baseman Suzy Brookshire doubled home center fielder Sara Olson with one down.
Cal Poly (10-15, 4-10), however, surged ahead at the first opportunity. With junior right fielder Lily Amos (above) – who matched a program season high with four hits – on second after doubling, Long Beach State starting righthander Kellie White (10-4) struck senior left fielder Jackie Napoli. Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett then scored Amos with a single to left field before Napoli crossed the plate through a throwing error by Long Beach State first baseman Alyssa Gonzalez.
The Mustangs added another run in the fourth with senior center fielder Noellah Ramos producing a one-out single to plate freshman pinch runner Sydney Frankenberger.
Cal Poly then furthered its lead to 5-1 in the fifth as senior first baseman Hailey Martin – who extended her hitting streak to 12 successive games during the doubleheader – reached on a leadoff fielding error by Brookshire at third base. Jeffries then delivered her third homer of the year.
After conceding Long Beach State's only run in the first, Allman (5-8) allowed just two hits between the second and fifth innings. She then stranded solitary Long Beach State baserunners in the sixth and seventh to close the game.
During Saturday's second matchup, Long Beach State again notched the opening run in the bottom half of the first with designated player Breezy Wise producing a two-out single to bring home Gonzalez.
The Mustangs equalized in the top of the second, however, loading the bases with two walks and Long Beach State's fourth error of the day before Ramos scored Barrett with a one-out sacrifice fly.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior righthander Dakota Casper (0-2) stranded her third Long Beach State baserunner to close the second before the hosts regained the lead in the third as second baseman Emily Salazar singled up the middle with two down, scoring left fielder Rylie Seip for the 2-1 advantage.
Cal Poly equalized in the fourth though, loading the bases with two down before Long Beach State starting righthander Samantha Fowler hit freshman second baseman Xiara Diaz to force home Barrett.
Long Beach State, however, utilized two Cal Poly errors during the bottom half of the fifth to add three runs to the scoreboard.
The Mustangs cut Long Beach State's lead to 5-3 in the sixth as junior shortstop Maddie Amos grounded out to plate freshman third baseman Mia Perez.
Long Beach State completed the scoring with a four-run sixth.
