LONG BEACH – Junior shortstop Maddie Amos (above) drove home both of the Cal Poly softball program's runs Sunday afternoon, but Long Beach State scored twice during the bottom of the sixth inning to outdistance the Mustangs in the series finale at LBSU Softball Complex, 4-2.
Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (5-9) retired Long Beach State in order to close the first inning before the hosts opened the scoring in the second. Third baseman Suzy Brookshire led off with a double before scoring through a single to right field from designated player Breezy Wise. After advancing to third with a fly out, Wise scored on an Allman wild pitch.
Cal Poly halved Long Beach State's lead in the top of the third after freshman catcher Kai Barrett drew a leadoff walk, moved to second through a sacrifice bunt by senior left fielder Napoli, advanced to third after senior center fielder Noellah Ramos singled and scored as Amos produced her first RBI of the day with a groundout.
Held to one hit in the fourth, Cal Poly equalized during the fifth. With Napoli on first and one down, Ramos reached through Long Beach State's second error of the afternoon. Amos then delivered a single to right field, bringing home Napoli to deadlock the matchup, 2-2.
Following Long Beach State's two-run second, Allman retired nine of 10 batters faced through the fifth. With Cal Poly retired in order during the top of the sixth, however, Long Beach State found the decisive runs in the bottom half as Wise produced a two-out triple to right center that scored Brookshire and first baseman Alyssa Gonzalez for the 4-2 final scoreline.
With a 2-for-3 performance, senior first baseman Hailey Martin – Cal Poly's leader with a .423 (33-for-78) batting average – extended her hitting streak to 13 successive games.
