SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior right fielder Lily Amos produced a game high two hits, but the Cal Poly softball program stranded 10 baserunners Friday evening against Big West Conference leader Cal State Fullerton and opened a three-game series with a 5-0 loss at Bob Janssen Field.
Cal State Fullerton (32-12, 16-0) took the game's only lead during the top half of the first with third baseman Hannah Becerra tripling with one down to plate right fielder Kelsie Whitmore.
After conceding Cal State Fullerton's opening run, Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (5-10) retired 10 successive Titans before walking left fielder Irie Siofele with two down in the fourth. Catcher Julia Valenzuela first delivered a run-scoring double down the left field line to push Cal State Fullerton's lead to 2-0. Second baseman KK Humphreys then plated Valenzuela with a base hit down the right field line for a 3-0 advantage.
Cal Poly (10-17, 4-12), meanwhile, was limited to a pair of singles and with just one baserunner in scoring position during the opening four innings against Cal State Fullerton starting righthander Sophie Frost (17-3). Freshman third baseman Mia Perez led off the fifth with a single, but sophomore pinch runner Ellie Yamashita was stranded on third to close the inning.
Titans first baseman Daisy Munoz led off the sixth with a home run to left field. Siofele followed with a base hit and, with Remington Ross on to run, Valenzuela completed the scoring with a RBI single to right field.
Cal Poly's best chance to break onto the scoreboard versus Frost came during the sixth as Amos led off with a double before senior designated player Shelby Jeffries singled and freshman catcher Kai Barrett drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Perez, however, flew out to deep center field to end the threat.
The Mustangs stranded two baserunners in scoring in the seventh to end the game.
With an 0-for-3 day at the plate, Cal Poly senior first baseman Hailey Martin saw a 13-game hitting streak snapped.
Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton complete the three-game series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 1. Game No. 1 of the doubleheader will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
