
Cal Poly Heads to Long Beach State for April 24-25 Series

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program returns to action after a two-week break when visiting Long Beach State for a Saturday, April 24 doubleheader and Sunday, April 25 single matchup. First pitch from LBSU Softball Complex is 1 p.m. both afternoons for Cal Poly (3-9, 9-14), which was idle during the April 17-18 scheduled competition dates after closing a four-game home series against Hawai'i (April 9-10) with a 6-5 triumph. After scoring 21 runs during the Hawai'i series, Cal Poly now ranks third among Big West Conference programs with a .300 team batting average. The Big West's leader for batting average (.332) and ERA (1.66), second place Long Beach State (20-5, 14-1) takes an 11-game winning streak into the series. Long Beach State's lone conference loss was a 3-2 setback at UC Davis (March 28).

CAL POLY VERSUS LONG BEACH STATE: Cal Poly looks for its first series victory against the 49ers since producing a three-game sweep at Long Beach State (April 16-17, 2016). The 49ers won two of three series games from Cal Poly in 2019 and 2018 after sweeping the Mustangs in San Luis Obispo during the 2017 season. Since the first meeting between the two sides on April 22, 1978, Long Beach State leads the all-time series, 48-30.
CLOSE, BUT: Including a 1-0 loss and 6-5 win to close the April 9-10 series against Hawai'i, 12 of Cal Poly's 23 games this season – 52 percent – have been decided by one run with the Mustangs holding a 4-8 record in those decisions.
MARTIN PLACING FINISHING TOUCHES ON STANDOUT CAREER: Named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week (April 13) after batting .923 (12-for-13) during Cal Poly's four-game home series against Hawai'i (April 9-10), senior first baseman Hailey Martin ranks third among Big West hitters with a .426 (29-for-68) batting average and a .500 on-base percentage and fourth with eight doubles while also leading Cal Poly with 29 hits. Also first in the lineup with nine multi-hit games – including Cal Poly's only four-hit effort of season during an April 9 contest against Hawai'i – Martin enters the Long Beach State series having hit safely in 10 successive matchups. A .315 (173-for-549) career hitter, Martin remains fifth in program history with 37 doubles, seventh with 98 RBI and 13th with 52 walks and 232 total bases. A starter in 190 of a possible 206 of Cal Poly's games since her 2017 freshman season – including all 23 this year – Martin is a .982 career fielder with just 23 errors in 1,278 total career chances.
CENTER (FIELDER) OF SUCCESS: Having never batted higher than .262 during her previous three seasons, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos takes a .350 (28-for-80) mark into Cal Poly's April 24-25 series at Long Beach State. Ranked second in Cal Poly's lineup with 28 hits, 17 runs and eight multi-hit games – including three-hit efforts versus Saint Mary's (March 6) and at UC Riverside (March 27) – Ramos has hit safely in 18 of 23 outings. Ramos has also struck out just seven times in 80 at-bats this year. A starter in 143 of 147 appearances for Cal Poly since her 2018 freshman season, Ramos is a .967 career fielder.
AMOS'S EXCEPTIONAL SEASON: Now a career .298 (68-for-230) batter after ranking second in Cal Poly's lineup and ninth in the Big West with a .351 (27-for-77) batting average, junior infielder Maddie Amos (top, center) co-leads the Mustangs with six multi-RBI games. Also sixth among Big West hitters with a .623 slugging percentage, seventh with four home runs and ninth with 48 total bases, Amos has hit safely in 19 of Cal Poly's 23 games.
CAL POLY'S MAY 1 DOUBLEHEADER OPENER SELECTED FOR ESPNU: For the first time in six seasons and just the second time in program history, Cal Poly will host a nationally-televised matchup at Bob Janssen Field with the first game of the program's Saturday, May 1 doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton scheduled for broadcast on ESPNU. First pitch for the doubleheader shifted to 2 p.m. (from 1 p.m.) for the matchup, which marks Cal Poly's first nationally-televised matchup since hosting Long Beach State on ESPNU on May 2, 2015.
