Team Defense, Efficient Scoring Send Cal Poly to Win Over LBSU
2/19/2021 5:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Thanks to one of its top defensive performances of the year, the Cal Poly women's basketball team led wire-to-wire on Friday afternoon against Long Beach State, as the Mustangs earned a 55-44 Big West Conference win at Mott Athletics Center.
The 44 points yielded by Cal Poly (improving to 10-7 overall / 6-5 BWC) are the squad's second-fewest allowed for the season, just one more than the 43 given up to UC Riverside on Jan. 29.
Cal Poly also limited LBSU (11-4 / 10-3 BWC) to 27-percent shooting, the second-best number surrendered in 2020-21 in field-goal percentage defense as well.
Sierra Campisano led the Mustangs with 12 points & 12 rebounds. Kirsty Brown, meanwhile, added 10 points and nine boards for Cal Poly, which saw all but six of its 23 baskets come off assists.
Off the bench, Maddie Vick shot a team-best 4-for-4 for the Mustangs, helping the squad shoot 46 percent altogether for the day.
The Mustangs incrementally added to their lead steadily on Friday, moving from a 12-10 margin through one quarter of play to 22-16 by intermission and then 35-27 heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Malia Holt capped a 9-0 run with a drive to provide the largest gap of the game — 46-32 — with 4:14 remaining.
Justina King paced LBSU with 17 points.
Game 2 in the back-to-back conference clash is set for 2 p.m. Saturday. The Feb. 20 rematch on the same floor will also be broadcast for free through the BigWest.TV video stream, with Zachary Anderson Yoxsimer calling the action via GoPoly.com (where a radio-only link can be found on the schedule page).
