Ellis Game-Winning 3 at Buzzer Lifts Cal Poly Over LBSU, 45-42
2/20/2021 5:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Mustang sophomore Abbey Ellis sank a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer on Saturday afternoon, lifting the Cal Poly women's basketball team over Long Beach State for a Big West Conference victory, 45-42 at Mott Athletics Center.

With the game tied up at 42, Cal Poly (improving to 11-7 overall / 7-5 BWC) called timeout with 10 seconds remaining. Ellis herself inbounded the ball starting out from the opposite baseline to Malia Holt, who swung it over to Maddie Willett along the left wing.
Willett then curled around the top of the arc, finding Ellis alone on the right wing. The point guard from Australia got the shot off with just under a second to play, with the horn lighting up as the ball was mid-air in its descent on the way to falling through the net to give the Mustangs a thrilling comeback.

It's Ellis' third game-winner over the past two years, albeit the first 3-pointer in that fashion — as the first two game-winners came from inside the arc.
Ellis finished with 11 points on 4-for-9 total shooting, including 3-of-6 from deep, and had four rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals.

She tied with Kirsty Brown (also 11 points, via a 4-for-7 evening) for the team high in scoring. Brown also secured a career-high 13 rebounds in her 33 minutes.
Meanwhile, junior post Zoe Stachowski also scored in double-figures, netting 10 points. Three of her four rebounds were offensive boards.

The exciting finish capped a back-and-forth battle, as neither squad led by any more than six points for the duration, with the lead being exchanged 11 times altogether, next to five ties.
With the win, the Mustangs moved into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, a half-game up on idle CSU Bakersfield and two games behind LBSU (11-5 / 10-4) staying in third.
