2/24/2021 11:24:00 AM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After moving into sole possession of fourth place in the Big West standings, Cal Poly has an opportunity to take on the first-place squad this week, as the Mustang women's basketball team visits UC Davis for a pair of conference matchups set for Friday and Saturday.
Each game on Feb. 26-27 at The Pavilion is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
Although fans are not permitted to attend, both matchups with the Aggies will be broadcast on BigWest.TV, with KDVS radio also calling the action online. All live video and radio links can be found on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
The Mustangs (11-7 overall; 7-5 BWC) come into this weekend a half-game up on CSU Bakersfield for fourth and two games behind third-place Long Beach State. Meanwhile the Aggies (7-1 / 6-0) remain unscathed through six league matchups, in their quest to win a fifth straight regular-season crown.
BWC TOURNAMENT HEADS TO VEGAS: The Air Force Reserve Big West Basketball Championships, presented by Hawaiian Islands, are booked for March 9-13 at Mandalay Bay's Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
Fans will not be permitted to the arena; however, the entire tournament will be streamed live on WatchESPN's networks. ESPN3 is accessible on computers, smart phones, tablets and streaming devices through both the ESPN app and ESPN.com, available nationwide at no additional cost to those with a subscription package.
ELLIS RANKS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS: Abbey Ellis is not only leading the conference in scoring by averaging 16.7 points; she also ranks No. 21 around the country in free-throw percentage (at .886), plus No. 32 nationally in steals per game (2.7).
Additionally, Ellis, who sank the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer on Feb. 20 vs. LBSU, now ranks 28th in program history for all-time scoring, with 752 career points.
The sophomore point guard out of Australia netted 39 points in the win over San Diego State on Dec. 21, the most by a Mustang since Jan. 4, 2018. The showing helped her repeat as Big West Player of the Week for Dec. 29, picking up her third career conference accolade. Shortly afterward on New Year's Day she had a 31-point outing at UC San Diego, fueled by knocking down eight 3-pointers. Her eight triples launched Cal Poly to a single-game program record for made 3s, connecting on 17 of 33 looks from behind the arc.
CAMPISANO ALSO CLIMBING SCHOOL-HISTORY LEADERBOARD: Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano — selected as Big West Player of the Week on Dec. 14 as well as College Sports Madness' BWC MVP for Dec. 21 — also finds herself among the league leaders in a handful of statistical categories. The senior forward from San Diego ranks No. 2 throughout the conference in scoring (averaging 15.9 points) and No. 3 in rebounding (8.9).
Campisano, a 2020 all-conference first-teamer, also is fourth in the league in blocks per game, at 1.2. A former transfer from Oregon, she also now ranks No. 26 in school history for career scoring, with 785 points as a Mustang.
A LOOK AT UC DAVIS: Due in part to Yolo County regulations, the Aggies have only been able to play eight games this year, but they've made the most of their opportunities, losing only to 11th-ranked Oregon, 63-57, on Feb. 6. UCD has been off since Feb. 13.
UC Davis ranks No. 2 in the country in team 3-point percentage, knocking down 40.7 percent from deep.
Cierra Hall, 2020's BWC Defensive Player of the Year, leads the nation in free-throw accuracy: 97.1 percent, while averaging 14.9 points & 7.2 rebounds. Sage Stobbart paces UCD on the glass with 7.4 boards a game.
VICK, BROWN JOIN TOP-5 CONFERENCE LEADERS: Mustang redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Vick and Cal Poly senior forward Kirsty Brown also start this week both ranked within the Top 5 across a couple conference leaderboards for the duration of 2021.
Vick's assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.1 since league action commenced presently ranks third throughout the entire Big West during conference play (while she's also No. 13 in the Big West for assists per game, via 2.7 overall). Brown, meanwhile, currently ranks fourth in the conference in offensive rebounding, averaging 2.6 extra possessions per game.
