UC Davis Remains Undefeated in BWC Play with Win vs. Visiting Cal Poly
2/26/2021 5:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly established an early seven-point lead on Friday at The Pavilion, but the UC Davis women's basketball team soon recovered en route to a home victory, remaining unbeaten in Big West Conference action with a 63-47 win.
Sophomore guard Abbey Ellis made a 3-pointer four minutes and 25 seconds into the first quarter to cap a 9-2 Mustang surge, providing the 12-5 lead.
Kayla Konrad answered with a layup and then a 3, however, on the next two possessions for the Aggies (8-1 overall / 7-0 BWC), bringing the deficit down to a mere basket.
The four-time defending regular-season conference champions then moved into the lead thanks to a Mackenzie Trpcic layup 29 seconds before the end of the period.
After starting the second half trailing 33-24, senior forward Sierra Campisano narrowed the gap with a bucket in the key to open the third quarter, but UCD would quickly counter with five consecutive points to retake a double-digit advantage.
Kirsty Brown finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks to lead Cal Poly (now 11-8 altogether / 7-6 in league).
It was the second straight 13-rebound effort for Brown, a senior forward who had rewritten her career-best on the boards with a baker's dozen against Long Beach State last weekend.
The Mustangs carved out a 13-7 edge in second-chance scoring for the day, but UCD — ranked No. 12 in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll — pulled away with a 19-2 margin in points-off-turnovers.
The two schools will reconvene on the same floor for a rematch on Saturday afternoon. BigWest.TV and KDVS Radio will again broadcast for free on Feb. 27, with tipoff set for 3 p.m.
