UC Davis Holds Off Cal Poly to Stay Unbeaten in Big West Action
2/27/2021 6:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly cut UC Davis' lead to a seven-point margin at two different moments during the second half on Saturday at The Pavilion, but the Aggie women's basketball squad didn't allow the Mustangs to pull any closer, staying unbeaten in Big West Conference play with a 62-53 win.
The defending regular-season BWC champs sprinted out to a hot start at home, scoring the day's first 10 points, but Cal Poly quickly battled back to trail just 14-8 by the end of the opening quarter.
Mustang redshirt junior forward Hannah Scanlan netted back-to-back baskets to wrap up the first half, narrowing the deficit to 27-19 at the break. Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano then converted a hook shot with 3:22 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the gap to 34-27. Mackenzie Trpcic countered with a 3 on the next possession, however, for the Aggies.
To finish the third, senior guard Chantel Govan scored on a layup, again bringing the Mustangs to just seven points back — via 40-33 — heading into the fourth quarter.
The Aggies started the final period with six straight points, though, as a Kayla Konrad 3 pushed their advantage back to 46-33 with 7:38 left, and the hosts were able to hold on down the stretch to improve to 8-0 in league play (9-1 overall).
Campisano tallied 13 points and six rebounds for Cal Poly (11-9 overall; 7-7 BWC). Scanlan shot 3-for-3 on the afternoon, while sophomore guard Maddie Vick distributed a team-high six assists.
The Mustangs now return home to welcome UC Santa Barbara to Mott Athletics Center for the Blue-Green Rivalry this upcoming Friday and Saturday.
Fans aren't permitted to attend on March 5-6, but each matchup set for 2 p.m. will be live video-streamed for free on BigWest.TV, with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer also calling the action on GoPoly.com. Seeding will be determined through the two games for the upcoming Big West Tournament, set for March 9-13 in Las Vegas.
