100-Yard Return by Oliphant Highlights Cal Poly's Season Finale
11/20/2021 9:51:00 PM | Football

RJ Martinez completed 11 of 22 passes for 167 yards and Luis Aguilar kicked a 40-yard field goal to complete the scoring for the Lumberjacks (5-6, 4-4 Big Sky).
Lepi Lataimua ran one yard for a touchdown, giving Cal Poly (2-9, 1-7 Big Sky) a 7-0 lead, and Chuby Dunu wrapped up the scoring for the game with a two-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
In between, Cal Poly freshman defensive back Xavier Oliphant returned a missed Northern Arizona field goal attempt 100 yards for a touchdown ending the first half, marking the first time that kind of play has happened in Mustang football history.
Northern Arizona compiled a 495-375 advantage in total offense and a 21-20 edge in first downs. Cal Poly held the ball for about two minutes more than the visiting Lumberjacks.
Daniels gained his 280 yards on 28 carries for a 10.0 average per trip. The freshman scored on runs of 3, 13, 23, 90 and 45 yards.
Martinez connected with Coleman Owen on a 62-yard touchdown pass with 3:23 remaining in the first quarter, tying the game at 7-7 and igniting a 38-point Northern Arizona run that was not answered until Oliphant's 100-yard return of the missed field goal.
Oliphant caught the errant kick in the back of the end zone and scampered mostly to the left sideline in front of the Cal Poly bench before turning right toward the middle of the field for the final 40 yards of his jaunt.
Chris Coleman produced a season-high seven catches for Cal Poly and Zedekiah Centers added five receptions. Quarterback Spencer Brasch completed 18 of 43 passes for 161 yards but was intercepted three times.
Freshman Zion Hall broke off a 59-yard run in the first half and finished with 82 yards on seven rushes. He also returned four kickoffs an average of 24.5 yards, including a 34-yard return.
Lataimua added 56 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Defensively, Fenton Will made a career-high 14 tackles (nine solo) and Matt Shotwell wrapped up his Mustang career with 12 stops (five solo), giving him 127 for the season, No. 5 all-time at Cal Poly.
Shotwell's 345 career tackles are No. 4 in the record book.
Shotwell was one of 27 Cal Poly football players honored in a pregame ceremony prior to competing in their final Mustang football game. The others were Jojo Falo, Lepi Lataimua, Aaron Cooper, Freddie Gaines, Lance Vecchio, Kyle Reid, Trevor Owens, Emeka Ndoh, Caden McCloughan, Brandon Davis, Chuby Dunu, Zach Hernandez, Matthew Stuppiello III, Christopher Bartolic, Mason Davis, Nick White, D.J.
