2019 -- Played in all 11 games as a backup boundary safety ... no tackles recorded ... earned a spot on the 2019 Big Sky Conference Football Community Service Team ... also landed on the Big Sky's All-Academic Team.

2018 -- Redshirt ... played in three games as a backup safety during junior season ... utilized new NCAA redshirt rule allowing a player who had yet to redshirt and played in four or fewer games to declare that season as a redshirt year ... did not record any tackles ... earned team's Dale Barthel Award ... played against UC Davis, Northern Arizona and Montana State.

College of San Mateo -- Played two seasons at College of San Mateo and also was a grayshirt during 2015-16 academic year as a part-time student ... transferred to Cal Poly with two years of eligibility and a redshirt year remaining ... recorded 38 tackles (27 solo) as a sophomore last fall and also broke up one pass play and blocked two kicks ... helped CSM to an 11-2 record and a spot in the state community college championship game against Fullerton College at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento ... Gaines made six tackles, broke up a pass and blocked one kick as a freshman in 2016 and was a redshirt in 2015 ... made the Dean's List each semester at College of San Mateo, earning Associate of Arts degrees in communications, social science and ethnic studies ... "Gaines is a big community college safety with athleticism," said former Mustang head coach Tim Walsh. "We expect him to come in and compete for a position and bring his leadership qualities with him. He has a big upside from state runner-up College of San Mateo."

High School -- A 2015 graduate of St. Ignatius Prep in San Francisco ... earned 42 tackles as a senior in 2014, broke up three passes, returned an interception for a touchdown against Monterey and a kickoff 98 yards for another score against Terra Nova ... averaged 19.5 yards per kickoff return and 4.1 yards per punt return with a long of 35 yards.
