Ellis Game-Winner Lifts Cal Poly Over Santa Clara, 57-56
12/14/2020 6:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the second year in a row, Cal Poly's Abbey Ellis made a game-winning shot at home during non-conference play, this time sending the Mustang women's basketball team to a 57-56 victory over Santa Clara on Monday evening in Mott Athletics Center.
Coming out of a timeout — down 56-55 with 2.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter — Mustang guard Malia Holt found Ellis breaking free on the inbound pass from the left baseline. Ellis took the moment of daylight for a quick catch-and-shoot a few steps outside the key, lofting the ball just over the reach of a leaping Bronco defender, swishing home the shot with 1.2 seconds left on the clock to put the Mustangs up one.
Santa Clara got one last shot off on the last play of the game after Lexie Pritchard's inbound pass perfectly found Ashlyn Herlihy in the post, but Mustang senior forward Sierra Campisano — mere hours after being named Big West Conference Player of the Week earlier in the afternoon — came up with the crucial block as time expired, preserving the win for Cal Poly (2-1).
Ellis, a 2020 All-Big West Freshman honoree, finished with a game-high 18 points.
The sequence was almost identical to Cal Poly's win over Lamar University on Nov. 30 of last season, when Ellis sank a game-winning layup with 1.6 seconds remaining — also resulting in a 57-56 final score.
Campisano added 14 points along with seven rebounds for the Mustangs on Monday, a few hours after being selected also as College Sports Madness' Big West Player of the Week and the Cal Poly Mechanics Bank Student-Athlete of the Week. She helped key a 26-12 points-in-the-paint advantage.
Redshirt sophomore guard Maddie Willett scored eight points for Cal Poly, including a pair of 3s, while Holt finished with a team-best five assists.
Cal Poly used an 11-0 run midway through the second quarter to take a 32-25 lead on the way toward a 34-28 margin at the break, but neither side allowed the gap to extend beyond eight points during a back-and-forth clash consisting of eight lead changes and five ties.
Bryce Nixon led Santa Clara (1-1) with 11 points off the bench.
The two squads will battle again on the same floor Tuesday afternoon, also at 3 p.m. in a WCC/Big West back-to-back matchup. Although fans are not permitted to attend in-person, live broadcast video and streaming audio with Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer are available through BigWest.TV, with links on the GoPoly.com schedule page.
