No. 2-Ranked Stanford Tops Cal Poly in Season Opener
11/25/2020 2:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
STANFORD, Calif. — For the first time following more than an eight-month hiatus from game action, the Cal Poly women's basketball team took to the court, driving up to the Bay Area on Wednesday morning to take on Stanford, the No. 2-ranked team in the country in each major poll. Powered by a 14-for-30 showing from 3-point land, the Cardinal — the highest-ranked opponent in Mustang history — ran away at Maples Pavilion with a 108-40 win in the season opener for both schools.
Sierra Campisano, an all-conference first-team honoree in 2019-20, led Cal Poly with 13 points and six rebounds. The 6-foot-3 senior forward knocked down 2 of her 5 looks from beyond the arc.
Sophomore guard Abbey Ellis, a 2020 Big West All-Freshman selection, scored to give the Mustangs an early 6-5 lead almost three minutes in, but the Cardinal would quickly assert themselves, using a 16-8 surge the rest of the opening quarter to head into the second up 21-14.
Stanford kept rolling from there, cruising to a 51-18 halftime lead before a commanding 78-24 margin after the third quarter. Preseason Pac-12 All-Conference pick Lexie Hull netted a team-high 19 points for the Cardinal.
Kiana Williams, meanwhile, a 2020 All-America honorable mention, added 13 points in the opening victory.
Following Thanksgiving, the Mustangs are set to return to Mott Athletics Center. Cal Poly will host New Mexico State at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10.
Although fans are not permitted to attend at this time due to multiple health & safety regulations, the game will be able to be followed live via BigWest.TV as well as the Mustang Radio Network, with all streaming links available at GoPoly.com.
The Aggies also opened their 2020-21 season Wednesday, edged in overtime at UTEP, 80-76.
