Ellis Adds 20 as Mustangs Top Aggies in non-conference Home Opener
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sierra Campisano led Cal Poly with a 31-point, 15-rebound performance on Thursday night, lifting the Mustang women's basketball team to a 70-60 non-conference win over New Mexico State in Mott Athletics Center.
Campisano, a reigning all-conference first-team senior forward from San Diego, went 12-of-21 overall from the floor, including a 3-for-4 display from 3-point range, while making half of her eight free throws. Four of her boards were on the offensive end.
Meanwhile, 2020 BWC All-Freshman point guard Abbey Ellis added 20 points, going 6-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line. She also had four assists and two steals.
Maddie Willett, a redshirt sophomore back on the court after her 2019 Big West All-Freshman accolade-earning debut, added nine points in the victory.
A 6-0 run early in the first quarter gave NMSU (1-3) a short-lived 6-5 lead, but Cal Poly (1-1) answered right back with six straight points of its own, on the way to a 21-15 first-quarter upper hand.
The game stayed close essentially for the duration, with the Mustangs heading to halftime up 34-31. The margin remained three, at 51-48 through three quarters, before back-to-back baskets by senior guard Malia Holt and Campisano pushed the gap to 55-48 with 8:13 to play.
NMSU rallied within 61-57 at the 3:52 mark, but Cal Poly proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach late.
Cal Poly imposed a 38-27 advantage on the boards, lending toward a 13-2 favor in second-chance scoring on the evening.
The Mustangs will continue a three-game homestand by hosting Santa Clara out of the WCC for back-to-back games on Monday & Tuesday, Dec. 14-15. Both tip off at 3 p.m.
Although fans are not permitted to attend vs. the Broncos, both matchups will be streamed for video (BigWest.TV) and audio (Zachary Anderson-Yoxsimer) broadcasts, with links available through the GoPoly.com schedule page.
