Mustang Softball Team Tops Bryant to Close ShareSLO Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman righthander Lindsey Chalmers (right) struck out four Bryant hitters in six and one-third innings of action as the Cal Poly softball program closed the 2015 ShareSLO Mustang Classic at Bob Janssen Field with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory against the Bulldogs.

Chalmers retired six of the first seven Bryant hitters faced, but with one down in the third and left fielder Lauren Keast on first, Bulldogs second baseman Liana Ogata launched a run-scoring double over Mustang left fielder Emily Ceccacci.

Held to four hits and with just one baserunner past second during the opening four innings, Cal Poly eventually squared the matchup in the bottom of the fifth. With one down, sophomore catcher Taylor Yzaguirre singled up the middle before moving to second through a sacrifice bunt laid down by freshman center fielder Amanda Sandoval. Ceccacci then doubled to left center to bring home Yzaguirre and tie the matchup 1-1.

Chalmers stranded the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and Cal Poly chalked up the decisive run in the bottom half of the inning. After freshman designated player Stephanie Heyward doubled to right center to leadoff, sophomore second baseman Ashley Tornio laid down a sacrifice bunt. Bryant second baseman Liana Ogata fielded the ball, but her throw was in the dirt to first baseman Jessica Benacquista and the miscue allowed Heyward to score the winning run from second base.

After conceding two Bryant hits in the top of the seventh, Chalmers (3-5) was pulled for sophomore righthander Sierra Hyland, who retired the only two hitters she faced and stranded two Bulldogs to earn her first save of 2015.

Cal Poly (11-14) continues action at the March 13-15 Fresno State Classic. Cal Poly opens its portion of the tournament on Friday, March 13 versus South Dakota State (3:45 p.m.) and Providence (6 p.m.).
