FRESNO – Having equaled South Dakota State's run total in the first, second and third innings on Friday afternoon, the Cal Poly softball team eventually utilized a three-run triple from sophomore second baseman Ashley Tornio in the sixth inning to open the Fresno State Classic with an 11-8 victory at Margie Wright Diamond.
In the first meeting between the two programs, South Dakota State (4-10) grabbed a brief lead with a run in the top of the first before the Mustangs (12-14) equalized in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore righthander Sierra Hyland singled up the middle with two outs to score freshman shortstop Chelsea Convissar.
South Dakota State then countered with a four-run top of the second, directed by a two-run single from left fielder Christian McKone before designated player Vanessa Kellems tripled to place the Jackrabbits up 5-1. Cal Poly, in turn, added four runs in the bottom half of the second. With two down and two Mustangs on base, senior left fielder Emily Ceccacci singled to plate freshman center fielder Amanda Sandoval from second. On the next pitch, Convissar belted her first career home run – a three-run shot – to deadlock the game at 5-5.
South Dakota State notched its final run in the top of the third and the Mustangs equalized for a third time in the bottom half as junior pinch hitter Betsy Colburn singled with, two down, to bring home sophomore second baseman Ashley Tornio.
Hyland (9-8), who came on to relieve Mustang starting righthander Lindsey Chalmers with two outs in the second, conceded just five hits during her tenure to earn the victory.
Having kept the Jackrabbits off the scoreboard, Hyland helped put the Mustangs in front in the bottom of the fourth. After doubling to lead off, Convissar moved to third base through a single by Mustang sophomore right fielder Courtney Tyler. Hyland then flew out to right field to bring home Convissar as Cal Poly went ahead 7-6.
Cal Poly then tacked on four additional runs in the sixth, highlighted by the three-run Tornio triple.
South Dakota State finalized the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh.
The Mustangs continue their five-game Fresno State Classic run on Saturday, March 13 against Providence (1:30 p.m.) and Montana (3:45 p.m.).
