
Schlemer Hits 1,001 for her Career in Win over Hawai'i

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Ariana Elegado connected on a pair of free throws with four seconds on the clock to hold off a late charge by Hawai'i in a 62-60 Big West Conference women's basketball game in Mott Athletics Center on Saturday. In the Mustang win senior Molly Schlemer became the 10th Mustang to score 1,000 points in her career.
With the win the Mustangs improve to a conference-best, 8-1 in conference games and 14-8 overall. UH falls to 11-10 overall and 5-4 in conference games. The game was played in front of 1,441 fans.
Cal Poly returns to the court on Feb. 13, when the team will host the BWC second-place team, Cal State Northridge.
Elegado led the Mustangs with 25 points and five assists when she connected on 10 of 20 shots from the floor. Schlemer needed 16 second half points to reach her total of 20 and 1,001 points in her career. Her field goal came with just 2:34 left in the game and put the Mustangs up five at the time. The post player's points came when she made nine of 16 shots from the floor and a pair of free throws.
Junior Taryn Garza recorded a career-high 12 rebounds with eight coming at the defensive end of the court. She also added a block and a steal. Sophomore Beth Balbierz came off the bench to add six points in the win.
Kamilah Jackson and Shawna-Lei Kuehu led UH with 14 points each while Destiny King added 11 points.
Cal Poly shot 41 percent from the floor, snapping a three game streak of shooting 50 percent or better, and made five of 17 from long range. The Mustangs made nine of 12 shots from the line. UH shot 38 percent from the floor, but was limited to just one of 11 from beyond the arc. Hawai'i struggled at the line, making just seven of 15 attempts.
Hawai'i outrebounded the Mustangs 43-41, dished out six more assists (12-6) and made one less turnover (11-10) in the loss.
Hawai'i opened the game on an 8-0 run before the Mustangs got on the board. UH held its largest lead of the game, 16-7, with 11:27 left in the half when the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to grab an 18-16 lead on a layup by Elegado at the 8:22 mark.
Cal Poly held its largest lead of the half at 4:02 (28-22) on an Elegado three and at 2:21 (31-25) on a Kristen Ale three. UH made a pair of late field goals to cut the Mustang lead to two, 31-29, at the break.
In the second half, Cal Poly made it a nine point game, 44-35, five minutes in to the period on a jumper by Elegado. And a 10 point game at the midway point, 48-38, on a layup by Elegado.
The Mustangs held their largest lead of the game, 11 points (53-42), with 8:29 remaining when Elegado connected on a three. But from that point Hawai'i slowly whittled away, cutting the lead to one, 58-57, in part on a 6-2 run, with 47 seconds remaining in the game. A jumper by Elegado with 19 seconds left put the Mustangs up three (60-57) and the free throws with four seconds on the clock upped the lead to five, 62-57. King connected on a three with less than a second left in the game for Hawai'i with the Mustangs running out the clock for the 62-60 win.
