
Molly Schlemer Records Double-Double in Mustangs, 65-56, Win over UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Junior Molly Schlemer led the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 65-56 win over UC Santa Barbara when she scored 18 points and in the Big West Conference game on Saturday in Santa Barbara.
With the Win the Mustangs improve to 8-4 in Big West games and 14-9 overall while UCSB fell to 11-13 overall and 7-5 in conference games.
Schlemer's points came when she hit seven of 13 from the floor and grabbed eight of 13 rebounds at the defensive end. Senior Kayla Griffin added 15 points as she hit five of 10 from the floor and three of five from long range and added seven rebounds. Ariana Elegado added 12 points. Junior Jonae Ervin led the team with 11 assists, her second time in double figures assists this season. She entered the game second in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (2.79) and did not commit a turnover in the game.
UCSB was led by Sweets Underwoodwith15 points and 13 rebounds. Angelei Aguirre added 12 points.
Cal Poly shot 45 percent from the floor and made eight of 17 (47 percent) from long range. The Mustangs made nine of 14 free throws and as a team had 17 assists. UCSB shot 35 percent from the floor and made just one of five long range. Cal Poly outrebounded UCSB, 38-34, but committed two more turnovers, 11-9.
Cal Poly opened the game when Ervin picked up a steal and a layup. UCSB responded with an Underwood layup to tie the game. The Mustangs then used a 16-0 and held UCSB without a field goal for over eight minutes. Three's by Elegado and Griffin propelled the run for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs held their largest lead, 17 points (21-4), with 9:53 left in the half when Elegado hit her second three of the game. UCSB used an 11-4 run over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 10, 25-15. Cal Poly rebuilt the lead to 14 on a layup by Nikol Allison and settled for a 10 point lead at the break, 33-23.
UCSB opened the second half with a three-pointer to cut the Mustang lead to seven, 33-26, but the Mustangs responded over the next six minutes to build the lead to 17 points, capped by a Griffin three with 13:18 left in the game.
Cal Poly maintained a double figure lead until the 7:04 point when Underwood hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 53-44. Cal Poly regained a 10 point lead on a three by Elegado with 2:47 on the clock and held on for a 65-56 win.
